Guzman has missed weight before as have many fighters in recent years. There seems to be a precedent set now, that I can force the other guy to make weight, not make weight myself and gain a significant advantage.

But Guzman / Funeka 2 set the bar far lower than ever before. He was so far overweight and did not appear to even attempt to make weight. How much was he fined for this and was he penalized in any way?

Fighters know that cancelling a fight takes away their own paycheck. It really isn't fair to say, "oh well he took the fight" and that is the end of the story.

It is one thing when Emmanuel Augustus comes in on 4 days notice to fight and is allowed to come in slightly over the contracted weight. But what is to stop Guzman from continuing to fight at 35 and weigh in around 145?

What did Guzman say about all of this? He clearly did not even attempt to get anywhere near 135 yet kept it a secret, no? Wasn't he nine pounds over the weight? A guy like Funeka is in no position to be turning down paydays. I know he was caught himself for a banned substance but that doesn't take away from this topic.

Will we see more and more of this?

There's no excuse for a guy that's been in the high 120's to not be able to make 135... BUT ON THE SAME TOKEN~!! Atleast he blatantly did it... Funeka tested positive for drug to help him make weight... But with Guzman, this isn't a one time thing. I'm surprised he ain't getting Castillo treatment..

It is what it is. It sucks, but for a lot of guys, making weight is pure hell.

Being a professional means making the necessary steps taken to perform your job. I wake up and get to the office on time or I don't get to keep my job. A guy who comes in over weight should not get to keep his check.

Didn't Funeka get caught taking a banned substance to make weight. They should have just made it a 140 lbs fight and be done with it.

His excuse was he didn't expect to be that far off when he woke up in the morning.I guess they were planning on him being 4-5lbs and then do some cardio and sauna to get the rest off, but they didn't even attempt anymore since he was so far off.

Not saying I buy it all of it, but I dont think Guzman really thought he was going to be 9lbs overweight.

I haven't liked Guzman since the whole Campbell thing i thought he conducted himself in a really shitty way through that whole ordeal.

And then when Funeka got cheated out of a win in that first fight I thought at least he'll get him in the rematch, but then Guzman comes in 9LBS. overweight that's inexcusable

I don't think this topic gets enough attention. Good post. I think some serious action needs to be taken. 1 year ban if you don't make weight or at least inform the other party in good time that you wont make weight and negotiate around it

Castillo did it twice against Corrales didn't he? They scrapped the third fight because of it.

It's unprofessional, and I'd like to see heavier financial penalties for those that do it, and still fight.

guzman career is an example of all that is wrong with modern boxing.the man is a two weight champ but has never being the best at his weight or unified.three times he has failed to make weight.he also was gifted a draw in the first ali fight

Guzman is waisting his career, he should either fight jmm at lightweight or move up to 140 and face khan, alexander or bradley. Otherwise he is just competing in meaningless fights.

Guzman is either cancelling the fight or failing to make weight. He has more of those in the last 5 years than the number of actual fight!

Maybe, after a second failure, the fight should be barred(for a time) from fighting in that weight class. That way, if it is such "pure hell" he still has ample opportunity to make his living in a more fitting, higher weight class.
