Fresh from Dan Rafael's weekend notebook...

    • With Vic Darchinyan planning to return to junior bantamweight to defend his belts after losing a bantamweight title shot to Joseph Agbeko, promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com he wants to match Darchinyan with interim titleholder Tomas Rojas, one of Darchinyan's mandatories. Shaw hopes to make the fight for Dec. 5 on Showtime. He said ideally he'll deliver Showtime a tripleheader that would also include lightweight Ali Funeka, whom he co-promotes, against Joan Guzman for a vacant lightweight belt and Yonnhy Perez, whom Shaw also co-promotes, in a mandatory shot at Agbeko. "What a great card. What a way for Showtime to close the year," Shaw said.

    He also mentions....

    • Once Golden Boy made the decision to slot Escobedo-Katsidis on Sept. 19, it left an opening for a televised bout on the HBO undercard of Lucian Bute's super middleweight title rematch with Librado Andrade on Nov. 28 in Canada. It could be another super middleweight title bout with beltholder Karoly Balzsay facing former "Contender" winner Sakio Bika, Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez told ESPN.com. "We're in talks," Gomez said. "Bika [whom Golden Boy co-promotes] is in. He'll fight anybody. We've talked to Balzsay's people and there's interest on both sides. It's a good fight and HBO likes it." Next week, Gomez is headed to Budapest, Hungary, site of this year's WBO convention and Balzsay's hometown. On a card being staged in conjunction with the convention, Balzsay defends his title on Aug. 22 against Robert Stieglitz, which he would have to win. Gomez will be at the fight and said he'll meet with representatives from Universum, Balzsay's promoter.

    Sounds good to me. :bbb

110% Ali whoops Joan. This is a great fight but not for Joan.

It depends on his conviction. Joan's a helluva fighter when he's in shape and focused. Hard to hit, good chin and great skills. It's a tough fight for both.

I really don't think Joan is that great of a fighter. He's slick and a good mover but he gets hit. The work rate, reach and stamina of Ali is going to be a problem. Joan is a top fighter without a doubt but I think his skills are not great...just very good in every area. I'm calling a dominating win for Ali. Potentially by TKO. But I've been wrong before.

i cant see that, unless Guzman has slowed down due to inactivity and age he should give Funeka a boxing lesson with his speed and defense.

Joan isn't a young fighter anymore and inactive, but even so, he IMO hasn't been GREAT! Nate would have beaten Joan and Nate had a world of trouble with ALI. If not for the 2 KD's Ali would have a win..Albiet Nate was weight drained from trying to make the weight but Ali is a smaller version of PW...less crafty but similar.

Yeah! this is the fight im interested in. We havn't seen Guzman in a minute. Joans' style will give anybody problems, but Funeka gots the tools to give Guzman hell. This is a great match-up.

Balzsay has balls, eh? but he's getting KTFO.

If Andrade beats Bute (he won't), then Andrade Bika is gonna be fireworks

Technically very sound, southpaw, upright Euro boxer. He's no slouch, that's for sure.

And as much as I like Bika he has little chnce here. Balzsay is just technically too good for him.
