Thursday, May 15 2008 WBO promises Guzman #1 ranking Now that Joan Guzman has vacated his WBO 130 pound title, the undefeated Dominican-born speedster is looking for a challenge at the lightweight level. "I think Nate Campbell would be a perfect opponent for me," said Guzman, who is a two-division champion with a record of 28-0, 17 KOs. "Nobody wants to fight Nate at 135 pounds and no one wants to fight me at 130 pounds. So let's just fight each other....If Nate is truly a world champion he will accept the challenge that I have laid out for him." Guzman, who is promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions might be on the fast track to get his shot at Campbell. "The WBO has assured Sycuan that Guzman will in fact become the number one contender at 135 pounds," stated Sycuan matchmaker Sean Gibbons. "Nate doesn't have a bunch of options right now. He thinks he's going to get a shot at Joel Casamayor, but that fight will never happen. Plain and simple, Nate's best fight is against Guzman."
Hope it happens, they both deserve a fight like this. Im going to be lmao at JMM if it does happen, same old horrible management preventing all the good fights for him.
Yeah I hope it too. Well Campbell has talked a lot the last weeks and seems to have some difficulties getting fights. I'm interested how Campbell will react. If he turns it down he'd better come with VERY good reasons imo (the most logical can be that it doesn't bring enough money to the table(?))
Damn.... Guzman is a true warrior, challenges the guys nobody else wants to mess with in high risk/low reward bouts. I wish more fighters had his fighting spirit and confidence. I'm not sure who I favour, Campbell's an absolute beast, but Guzman's an amazingly skillful fighter. It'll be close, if both bring A+ gameplan's. I'm a long follower of Campbell, but if the fight is made, I will have to go with a top 3 favourite with Guzman and wish him the very best.
I think Guzzy beats him in a close fight cos I dont rate Campbell too much. If they can get this fight early though, this would put Guzman in a greta position for future big fights. If Pac has any intentions of either going for the undisputed belt or the ring belt, he would either have to go through Casa or Guz. And should Casa loose to either Juan Diaz or JMM, its game on.
I'm very happy that Guzman announced this, but at the same time to be honest I'm a tiny bit worried. A 100% Campbell (the one who showed up against Diaz) would be Guzman's toughest fight at 135 for a number of reasons (size, skill, style, stamina, etc.). If this fight happened and Guzman lost a close decision, it would be a huge, huge setback. But the risk would definitely be worth it, especially since Pac/Casamayor wouldn't fight him. Campbell would probably accept this challenge and if Guzman won, he would be immediately known as the top LW (or at least one of the top 2 fighters to beat). I would favor Guzman in this matchup because he would be able to outbox him and make the fight move at a pace that would better suit him. Campbell would get frustrated in this fight and be thrown off his game IMO. A lot of people would probably complain about Guzman potshotting in this fight, but Guzman started at 122 and would be up against someone much larger than him, so it's completely excusable. Plus, I'm sure Guzman would brawl and exchange with him in parts like he always does, he's not capable of strictly safe boxing 100% of a match because he has too much of a fighter's heart for that. Another belief I have is that Campbell will never perform at the level he performed against Diaz. It might be a silly thought, but I think Campbell will never be as motivated as he was against Diaz and that was basically a performance of a lifetime. Diaz's style also pushed Campbell to perform the way he did and I think Guzman's style would put him in a different frame of mind. I favor Campbell over everyone but Guzman and Juan Diaz in a rematch, so if Guzman won it would truly be a great win. I'm afraid people would continue to severely underrate Guzman if he beat Campbell (because of Campbell's losses to Peden, etc.), but **** those people. But yeah, anyone that ever criticized Guzman's lack of balls needs to look at his career realistically. He's afraid of nothing and calling out Campbell is insanely brave.
IMO Juan Diaz is a solid B fighter, probably in the same league as Soto. Never rated him at all, just so happens he came at a time when the 135 division is so weak. Castillo is a B+/A- fighter and he would have absolutely dominated Juan Diaz, so would Corrales.
Castillo wins, but does not dominate, NO WAY. Too slow, he'd win a competitive fight on the bigger shots. Corrales loses by being outworked to a UD. Juan can take a ****ing shot and he will always be there to land his punches in bunches for scoring. Let's not get overworked here, I could easily see Campbell beating a prime Castillo. Castillo and Corrales were top fighters, but not elite's that would go right through other top fighters, their record indicates this clearly.
Campbell would sooner vacate than fight Guzman. He has one, maybe two, opportunities to cash out on his career. He wants a big money fight. He'll stall as long as possible to get JMM or Pacquiao. He might even take Casamayor. But no way is he going to fight Guzman, who's a worse style matchup for him than the other guys, and who brings much less money to the table.
Hell yeah.. This would be one hell of a fight.. If this fight does happen, then all this might blow up in JMM's face and he'll be the one left without a fight.. JMM could fight Juan Diaz, but I doubt he will.. Anyways, I think this would be a close fight and I have a hard time choosing who to win.. For now, I'll say Campbell by a close decision..
i think frank warren will have a massive say in that no.1 ranking in the WBO!! with his charge khan in that mandatory position in the near future
