Source in the IBF claims Joan Guzman and Yuri Romanov will face each other for the IBF lightweight title. No deal or date has been set but apparently they're the two highest ranked "available" contenders.

    An intriguing contest, early thoughts?

if this is true, my early thoughts are simple romanov is good solid all round fighter who pac a deacent punch but aslong as guzman is on good condition he will skool him

romanov has nob been in a ring with anyone with the abilities guzman has

it's all circumstance. Nobody expected Campbell to lose his belts on the scale. Guzman's best shot at a LW belt was the regular WBA title. But then Campbell drops the belts and the IBF wants a sanction fee soon, and the highest ranked guys available are these two.

I would have rather seen Guzman-Funeka, but the IBF probably does not want to wait on Funeka to be ready before they collect the next fee

Guzman doesn't deserve a title shot...and if he is gonna get one he should at least be trying to get it from one of the elites instead of putting up this illusion that he's unbeatable...against subpar opponents.

Regardless, nobody should get a shot before Ali Funeka.

Funeka had his go. Now the next 2 get a shot. I'm sure Ali will fight the winner.

IBF were in a lot of trouble a few years back when it was found that Bob Arum had bribed the IBF to get fighters ranked. Now they do things by the books. Just cos a guy deserves, doesn't mean he gets the shot. This is an organisation that has stripped some of the biggest names for not fighting some no hoper or other. Don't be surprised.

Romanov v Guzman is a good matchup. Hopefully Yuri can do the job. It is a very awkward fight for him.
