Funeka....118-110 on card....anything from 118-110 to 116-112 is reasonable....anything closer is a joke...
I just rewatched the fight...and I was trying to justify a 114-114 card....I originally had it 116-112. Since I was looking for a reason to give Guzman some rounds, I ended up seeing rounds 3, 7 and 11 for Guzman...rounds which I originally gave to Funeka. Guzman also had rd 8 until he got caught with that right hand... I'm starting to not think it was a terrible robbery....
I never thought it was an awful robbery either. The winning judge had it 116-112. Is it impossible that 2 judges changed 2 different rounds. Like I said Guzman could be justified in taking 3 of the first 4 and atleast one of the championship rounds. Even Harold Lederman said there were swing rounds. I think robbery is one of the most over used terms in boxing. I read Dan Rafael's scorecard on ESPN.com and he said it was not a bad call or a rip off it was a high way robbery. Very exageratted. It was close closer than it seemed at first. You have to watch without the commentary and watch closely. Sometimes you only think a guy one becaue of an unofficial score or the announcer. I thought Funeka won by 116 to 112 or 117 to 111. I have not rewached the fight plus I had a bias because I rooted for Funeka. Like I said bad call but not the highway robbery GBP payoff I have been reading about.
I think 115-113 would be generous to guzman....114-114 makes no sense at all....I had it 118-110, on clean effective punching, and ring generalship....guzman did almost nothing past round 2.....he got in a few times, but he still got outworked and outlanded in those rounds.....I dont look overall and said see, this guy won.....what I use punch stats for is to back up my claims and scoring round-by round....and it shows this fight was a rout in funeka's favor.....even if some want to say funeka's powershots didn't land cleanly...so what... the funeka jab was the best punch of the night...it landed cleanly, and a jab counts the same as a powershot...its a connect.....guzman did absolutely nothing to warrant a round past 2....
I thought Funeka did take over in round 3 or 4 and may have lost a round or two later in the fight. I think Funeka won but I am not that surprised with the draw. Kinda like Rahman Toney I I thought Rahman won but it was a draw and I did not really argue
Funeka, easy. I couldn't believe it. And I agree with pretty much everything that Jeff Young posted above...
Good post and good analysis, Jeff. I can't see how anyone would have given Guzman more than three rounds, tops.
