he got hurt BADLY by karpency who isnt a big puncher and was considered a bum when stevenson fought him. I see it as a bump in the road. it was not a very big punch but Gvodzyk looked punch drunk. a lot of people are dropped early but a lot of them get up and are okay. Gvodzyk couldnt stand properly at first and the ref could have stopped it if he wanted it took Gvodzyk a few rounds to recover but he was hard to hit clean again by a very very limited Karpency. Im not going to call Gvodzyk a glass jaw but I think his chin may be more suspect than we think. his skills are there however
I didn't think Gvozdyk was nearly that badly hurt. He'd recovered by the next round, just was extra cautious. Boone hurt Andre Ward worse, KO'ed Stevenson, and dropped Kovalev; granted, Boone is a bigger puncher, but like you said, it was just a bump in the road for those three, and may well be the same for Gvozdyk. Jacobs got dropped by Mora and then proceeded to survive against GGG ...
your last point was pretty true. I do think that jacobs and stevenson have weak chins but their style has it so they are never hit clean with punches and they both went on to be world champions. stevenson beat the count and walked backwards and the count was stopped. as it should be when you can't even stand properly. Jacobs vs mora wasnt a massive knockdown.
He was stopped by Pirog though. It is all on the night. Did not realise Karpency dropped him though, interesting.
Gvozdyk's chin is fine. He's just so fluid in his O that he sometimes leaves that chin exposed particularly to the R hand. For a kid with 13 pro fights, I'd say his wins over Chilemba, Karpency, and Gonzalez make for a better resume than chickenson after his 4th title defense. As for talk about Jacobs chin.......gotta believe all the specualtion as to that was thrown out the door last month when he took one of MW history's heaviest hitters shots and maintained conscience and more importantly, composure. The Mora KD was proven a fluke, and the Pirog TKO proven to be a rookie mistake. Gvozdyk's KD by TK will also like prove to be a rookie mistake. But even if he does take more KDs in his career, his skills are far above those of Chickensons, Beterbievs, Wards, and even Kovalevs, and his power is looking just as lethal as the far more hyped aforementioned killers.
Nathan knows all about the power of Karpency 'Cleverly: Karpency the hardest puncher I have fought Nathan Cleverly came through his third world title defence with relative ease tonight, taking a landslide points win over American Tommy Karpency and immediately defended the choice of opponent for the Cardiff bout. The Cefn Forest man jumped to champion the challenger in the wake of scepticism over the fighter ranked number eleven by the WBO and stated in a TV interview after the fight that the southpaw hits deceptively hard. “It was a good workout. Tommy is very tough,” Cleverly told BoxNation’s John Rawling after the fight. “In all fairness, a lot of people have been criticizing Tommy Karpency coming into the fight and been very cynical saying he shouldn’t be in the ring with me. “Let me tell you that out of everybody I have fought, he has hit the hardest out of all the light-heavyweights I have fought. I have fought some big punchers and he hits harder than them!” Cleverly, 25, improved his undefeated record to 24-0 with the victory and has been linked to fights with Beibut Shumenov (WBA champion), Bernard Hopkins (WBC champion, Tavoris Cloud (IBF champion and compatriot Enzo Maccarinelli in the near future.'
Agreed, I have watched it several times. Gvozdyk got up, dodged the bombs Karpency was throwing until the end of the round, and then went straight back to business in the next round. What was more of a problem was that Gvozdyk has sometimes lost a bit of composure momentarily when he got tagged, however he did much better in that regard against Gonzalez.
Definitely, but that's why it's important that something like that happens on your way up the ladder. Allows you to learn from it. Gonzalez in 3 is a pretty good win; I thought he beat Pascal when they fought.
Not bad dominating a guy who had recently won clearly vs former LHW boss Pascal, KOing a guy I can't remember anyone, EVER KOing, who also happens to hold a W over a top CW contender in Vlasov, and a draw vs current WBC CW boss who just beat a top 10 HW, in Chilemba. Add to that, KTFO recent WBC title challenger and former WBC boss Dawson conqueror Karpency, And also KOing IBF title challenger Mohammeddi just as dominating as did the top dog at LHW in Kovalev. A couple solid wins over gatekeepers Gbenga and Sierra round out pretty solid career, and this kid in looking for his 14th fight, entering just his 4th yr as a pro. I wonder if Main Events and Roc Nation would like add a nice co-main with an almost guaranteed fireworks display, for almost next to nothing in terms of spending big. I bet Chad Dawson would be up for a big stage fight. He's certainly no chicken-shiit. Also.....Joe Smith Jr, while he'd be completely outclassed, would definitely have the R hand punchers chance, and could pull the ultimate upset.
I find it disturbing sometimes that people can literally see what they want to see, I have no idea what match you were watching. Gvozdyk got clipped by a very hard right hook he didn't see coming and went down, then he popped right back up a little too fast before his head had cleared and did a woozy stutter step, and then he stabilized, and that's it, he went on to comfortably win the remaining rounds without so much as an issue. Was he cautious and boxed hyper defensively for the rest of the match, of course he did, he'd never been put down before, if anything it jolted his confidence and freaked him out for a few rounds, and it visibly showed on his face, but he was far from groggy and out on his feet for half the match like you were implying.
They said Beterbiev had a bad chin when he went down when he was off balance and got hit from that wrist/forearm shiver form Page Jr. Wait until they find out who Ivan Golub is and they discover he went down once. He will get the same label.
Pirog knocked Jacobs out, Golovkin knocked him down and later staggered him with an uppercut then a jab, good thing it was at the end of the round or Jacobs would have been out. SOB was hurt, staggered by Kovalev by a jab, also knocked down, SOB then grabbed Kovalev's leg, held, used his elbows, tried to butt Kovalev the entire fight. SOB did nothing but depend on his judges and referee. SOB refused to fight a rematch unless he could pick all three judges, the referee and of course he owns the boxing commission............Gvozdyk is an excellent boxer, he would beat SOB's dirty cheating arse................
