I AM the original hardcore Gvozdyk fanboy on the site, aside from maybe Vysotskyy, not sure how hardcore he was, but he liked him alot. And get it straight you're overrating Barrera, for the very same reasons.
Who exactly this opponent is doesn't matter much (he was the best willing/available opponent down the WBC rankings). This fight is a part of the bigger plan: http://wbcboxing.com/wbceng/news/9993-wbc-light-heavyweight-division-status223 And Uncle Bob did a hell of a job arranging that, I'm almost sure! And, concerning Gvozdyk's inactivity, partially there were some unfavorable circumstances (like good boxers avoiding a fight with him), but partially Gvozdyk himself was to blame. Like not wanting to fight Kovalev because they are buddies... Oh, really? Come on, you are a professional, you should fight anyone, especially champions.
The hardcorist of the hardcore! I'm a huge fan of both guys and have been from the start but i still think Gvozdyk has an edge. He's got a decent size advantage, he is quite fast himself, has better fundamental defense, throws combinations with more variety, and probably hits harder imo. Sasha has an excellent jab but so does Bivol not sure who would win that battle. in general Arum is garbage with prospects and Gvozdyk is suffering that. He did right by him off the start but guys frequently languish once they reach title contention.
Wouldn't Alvarez fight for the interim title against Gvozdyk make more sense and winner fights Stevenson v Jack winner?
Not for Alvarez. He dropped out of that fight: http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/...se-bid-vacant-interim-title-oleksandr-gvozdyk
LOL I bet he did Stevenson v Jack winner would be his best chance at winning, this interim title fight makes no sense just dollars for the WBC
Actually, the interim title does make sense in this case — it's a good pretense to force a fight vs. the Stevenson-Jack winner in a complicated situation like this.
Really you say it makes sense but its a complicated situation? Who does it force the Stevenson v Jack winner to fight Alvarez or the interim title fight winner? I thought interim title fights were mainly just for when a champion is out for extended period? Do you know why there is an interim title fight in the super-lightweight division tommorow with Prograis and Indigo then 7 days later a vacant title fight with Ramirez vs Imam, you dont think it has anything to do with WBC making extra $ from licence fees?
Sometimes it helps to put more efforts to formulating questions... The current champion is a little bit "out", yes. So, the WBC have decided to come up with a solution to rule out the situation. Because, again, the situation is complicated (discussed many times here, so I'm not going to dwell on that again) their solution was to have an eliminator. Actually, the first part of that eliminator was Gvozdyk vs Craig Baker fight. Then the WBC ruled the Gvozdyk-Browne fight, but Browne pulled out... Then they decreed that Alvarez should fight Gvozdyk. Alvarez pulled out...
As a result of all that Gvozdyk is now fighting Amar... Is it a good opponent? Hell, no! Do I want to see Gvozdyk fighting Browne or Alvarez instead? Hell, yes! But, after all, the Gvozdyk vs. Stevenson/Jack will be a great fight. And the winner of that fight will be a good WBC champion. And, after that, the champion (Gvozdyk/Stevenson/Jack whoever of them wins) will defend his title against Alvarez. That will be a great fight as well. So, let's just hope for the best.
I can be a smart arse I admit and was a little bit in my earlier response but it wasn't meant to be at you more the situation but I appreciate your responses as there was a few things I wasn't aware of.
Gvozdyk has to fight someone, it's better than not fighting at all like Beterbiev has been doing..........
Top Rank did a very poor job with Korobov and Mekhontsev, and even Lomachenko until recently wasted time with two fights per year against nondescript opposition. What has been happening to Gvozdyk is exactly what I feared when he signed with Top Rank. Signing with Top Rank nowadays is a lot like signing with Don King ten years ago, the fighters are poorly promoted and ruined by low-reward opposition, poor pay, and/or inactivity. Golden Boy and K-2 (and even Main Events with their limited budget) have been doing a much better job for their fighters.
Yeah not the best matchup. Gvozdyk is definitely not Bobs priority.. he's not really focused on Alex's career. He needs to go to another promoter that will really get him the big fights. his age is ripe. it's now or never.
