Almost exactly my first thoughts, but then I asked myself: "Hey, wait, the weakest doesn't necessarily means weak so WHO is the weakest LH champion right now?". And that's not an easy question...
Govzdyk handed Mohamedi his worst defeat, so this one should be just a warm up for him. He's got the tools to become the dominant LHW, IF his promoter gets him the fights!. He's tall and rangy, has excellent jab and pinpoint accuracy. He throws in a big variety of punches and puts together killer combos. And he hits hard. Excellent ring IQ, very good defense and quick feet. He also does very well, for a tall guy, at close distance and although he's a skilled operator, Gvozdyk, can also brawl, if need be. In a highly stacked LHW, he's probably the most dangerous man atm. Should he decide to bulk up and move to cruiser, I only see Usyk and Gassiev with a real chance of beating him.
Which of all Gvozdyk's fights demonstrates this (close distance, brawling) the best, in your opinion?
OK, on the way to the HOF I have one question: Didn't I see him get knocked on his ass by a bulked up Super-Middleweight, part-time boxer, full-time nurse?
That is a good question, who's the weakest? Stevenson; almost 41 years old, 1 fight a year, questionable opposition, been KOed once by a non puncher. Kovalev; underperformed in his two superfights against a SMW, 35 years old, can't take body punches. Beterbiev; 34, NO competition, few rounds, went 11 3/4 rounds against a bum in his last fight. Bivol; not at his peak yet, also little competition.
Not sure why you dislike Jack , his comeback has been astonishing and he fights like a warrior. You dislike overly defensive fighters, but he's not anything like that at all. He came back from getting knocked out in 30 secs against Edwards to beating Dirrell, Groves, Bute, DeGale (He should have won this), Cleverly. It's such a great story . You oughta find a soft spot for him! He's one of the best stories in the sport of boxing.
Gvozdyk went 9-0 in his first two years and then he had a break out year in 2016 with wins over Mohammedi, Karpency and Chilemba. But the he fights only twice in 2017(both fights a step down from previous opposition) and now hes fighting Mehdi Amar? At least the interim WBC title is on the line, for whatever that is worth.
@ellerbe It was NOT his off night unfortunately… That’s the way Gvozdyk fights... By the way, am I the only one who thinks of Klitschko (Wlad) when I see Gvozdyk fights? He’s also too safe, too tentavite (thanks god Gvozdyk is more diverse, at least)… I’m afraid even if Alex becomes a champion (the real one, not interim) he will be quite a boring champ… He’s also quite boring at the press conferences… But, to be fair, we also had underestimated this Mehdi Amar guy. He’s maybe not an elite boxer, obviously, but he’s kind of unorthodox and tricky and he came to this fight 100% prepared. Mentally he was absolutely sure that god (he’s a devoted muslim, as far as I understand) gave him this opportunity to become a champion. He was phenomenally well conditioned – just look he actually moved away from Gvozdyk all the fight (trying to get his chance counterattacking) and in the last round he was almost as fresh as in the first one... He’s also got a very strong chin.
