I found a gym near by my house with good coaches and good price. Only catch is is, there is no ring and no sparing at this particular gym. Should I still join up?
I know a couple of gyms with no ring.. they just travel to other gyms for their sparring. In fact, most sparring you get is from other gyms anyway, so there wouldnt be any real difference.
Really? I've honestly never seen sparring with other gyms. Seen promotional rivalry's, but not sparring with other gym's as you suggest. I actually left one club for another because the one I was at was more focused on fitness then promoting santioned fighters. It may just be different where you are, dunno. I am in Canada here.
Without a ring and sparring it's not very useful. But you could do the preliminary work first, sparring is for later anyway. At some point you do need it though.
That's kinda like a gym without a power rack or squat rack, it just isn't a gym without one or both. The same way I don't see how you could call that place a boxing gym without a ring.
As long as you have a coach there to help you out with the fundementals id sign up but after 2-3 months id probablly look around at other gyms for sparring which is what you need.
When their are a few cards coming up, there will upto 20 fighters from different gyms then mine at my gym for sparring - the sparring i do for fights is all done with guys from different gyms.. I only 'stay sharp' with guys from my gym. So I maintain that you do not need a ring at your gym. In fact, some of the better fighters i know come from a gym without a ring.
How often do you spar normally? I spar about three times a week, visiting other gyms that often would be a nuisance.
That's exactly right. 3 times a week, maybe sometimes 2. From light sparr, to technical sparr, to all out let's kick each other's ass sparr. If I am going in a ring with someone from another club here, it is a fight. Whether it is santioned or not. Just wondering if it is done differently elsewhere. Which it appears to be.
At least get the basics from there. Then when your better ask your coach what arrangements they can make if they can. If not find a new gym
When Im coming upto a fight.. between 2 and 4. But, because my gym does have a ring people come to my gym to spar me - so its no inconvenience for me. Just out of interest, a pro I was sparring would travel over an hour to my gym.. thats the bad side of travelling to someone elses gym.
