Tell me everything you can. Read a little bit about him in a special issue of Boxing News and was wondering a) is there any footage of him (I.e the Griffith fight) and was he any good (sounds to be a bit of a Clown, but what was his style?) Apparenty had to retire die to being blind in one eye but is there any fighters you'd pick him to beat, and how could e have done if not for the injury? Apparently he wasn't a particularly hard trainer.
Some posters here have seen the Griffith fight and not been terribly impressed by it. I wouldn't judge Harris based on one fight though. He seemed to be a talent but he never quite got to display all of it, being only 22 years old when forced to retire. A win over Curtis Cokes is very impressive. He fought his whole career blind on one eye. How old was he when je beat Cokes then? If you haven't seen it A, I guess it's not out there. Thanks for the links :good anyone else? Anyone who can summarise his style (unless he was completely unlike anyone) A, I can imagine him maybe being a better Welter and the fact je wa fighting Griffith may be reasons why he doesn't look all that great. Still interested in him though, as aforentioned, thanks for the links.
He had just turned 21 years old I think. I don't have that big of a collection really. The fight is definitely out there somewhere, I just haven't made much of an effort to acquire it. Hopefully someone will eventually make it available for everyone's viewing at some point. A poster here named klompton has seen the fight and describes the action here: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153548
Thanks very much, gives me more of an indication of what he may have looked like in style. Still, would love to see the Cokes fight.
I don't think he really was a great fighter. I'm not sure how to explain it, but he seemed to me more like a flashy, colorful crowd-pleaser than a real top quality fighter; perhaps like a better version of Emmanuel Augustus. He did have a non-title win over Curtis Cokes, which is his biggest claim to fame, but for the most part he fought other second tier contenders like himself and got away with a few close, disputed decisions in his hometown. His loss to a slightly faded Griffith revealed something of a lack of substance on his part IMO.
I think that it was Angelo Dundee who said that you did n't have sparring sessions in Philly gyms. You had wars !!!
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJNeed8GlSE[/ame] He does look to be a clowning fighter here, and primarily one handed. Also, against (admittedly massive Welter) Griffith he looks small, and although he beat Cokes against a fighter of Griffith's level he doesn't seem to have much to offer. Emile does a Griffith on him. Still, might be of some interest to those who haven't seen it.
That was Davey Moore - the fighter Duran beat for the jr. MW title. Gypsey Joe died as a result of an alcohol problem a few years after being forced to retire because of vision problems.
And before anyone asks, it was Rudell Stitch who died trying to save his friend from drowning. Two ace fighters here [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EHXFek4hYU[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTIP-pbGY44&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTcUrRE_Ztk&feature=related[/ame]
