I have always thought that Aaron Pryor would beat Thomas Hearns, Mike Tyson would beat the 1970s Muhammad Ali, and James Toney would beat Marvin Hagler. Before the storm of abuse starts.... I think Hearns, Ali and Hagler are better fighters p4p. I just think Pryor's chin, stamina, relentless style and variety, would have been a nightmare for Hearns. He could've stunned him by a late stoppage in a 15-rounder. I think Tyson's rapid attacks would have got to Ali by the mid-late rounds, and badly hurt him on the way to a UD. I think the young Toney could have gradually picked Hagler apart over the long stretch and took a SD or MD. Do any of you guys have opinions of this sort, a guy who think could have beaten a particular p4p greater fighter h2h??
I don't see any of these happening, except maybe a Tyson KO of Ali. A young Toney, especially at 160, was inconsistent, relatively green and still improving. Pryor was too small, and open. Hearns learned to improve his power a lot in his pro career. There's always gonna be greater, more achieved fighters that I think lose to less accomplished fighters. Styles play big parts obviously. I'd make Pryor the favorite over Mayweather and maybe Whitaker as well at 140, and Mayweather and Whitaker are greater fighters than Pryor. Joe Louis is the greater fighter historically than Lennox Lewis. Would I favor Louis head-to-head over Lennox? Probably not. Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya were greater fighters than Donald Curry. I don't see either of them at their best beating the Curry who made Milton McCory look like a bum. I don't know if I'd pick them over the best version of Marlon Starling either, but Tito and Oscar are certainly greater fighters than the Connecticut Magic Man.
I give Pryor no chance against Hearns and Toney no chance against Hagler. I think stylistically it is about the exact opposite actually in these fights. Toney simply didn't have the footwork or movement to beat ANY great MW. Hagler would box circles around him from the outside and hold his own in mid-range or the inside. McCallum arguably beat Toney and McCallum's no Hagler. Pryor was just too small for Hearns. He'd get tagged with crisp shots that he's not laughing off as he did Arguello's. I'd figure Hearns would KO him in the early rounds. Their amateur bout means nothing, as Hearns was a feather-fisted amateur who's power wasn't brought out until he teamed up with Steward. Tyson over Ali is a possibility. Not sure who I'd favor though.
The intention of the thread was more to see if anyone else had theories like this, of a guy who could beat a greater fighter on a given night, not merely an invitation to comment on my choices. Do you have any of your own Pea??
There are loads. Ricky Hatton would beat Tszyu and Locchte, but is way behind them in terms of ATG'ness. Lennox Lewis would beat George Foreman IMO, though George is probably slightly ahead.
I think Locche would make Hatton look foolish. Only problem is his lack of offense in comparison to someone like Floyd. He had better defense and skills in certain areas than Floyd though, most of them involving the inside game. I don't think he'd have too much trouble with Hatton really, considering he was able to run a far better inside fighter close in Carlos Ortiz.
