I agree with your last sentence. I also didn“t want to interfere with your arguement with Janitor, just wanted to add that you sell Schmeling a bit too short which happens often I must say. btw. Schmeling fought Uzcudun 3 times and beat him easily 2 out of those three, once before and once after that "draw" in Uzcuduns hometown.
Uzcudun was 0 wins 2 losses and 1 draw in his last 3 fights before losing to Louis in his last fight. This is one Louis fight I've never seen. Jack Sharkey was 2 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw in his last 7 matches before losing to Louis in his last fight. I have seen this one. Sharkey looks horrible. My conclusion is these are big name wins for Louis over shot fighters. The Baer win however was excellent.
Ali was certainly bigger, stronger ,hit harder ,and was more durable than Conn ,but I think Conn was the better boxer .
The Louis that demolished Baer would be favored over all of the above mentioned fighters IMO. In that fight he took a few bombs from Baer who is regarded as one of the hardest hitters in HW history and gave right back without flinching. His jab was a thing of beauty in that fight and the power in his punches was awesome. He would cut up Marciano with his jab and TKO him late. If Ali tried to rope a dope, Louis would cave in his body. If Foreman was afraid of Quarry, he'd **** his pants against Louis and a few right hands on Tyson would have him biting the turnbuckles! That version of Louis was the epitome of what a heavyweight boxer should be. Economy of motion, solid fundamentals and precision power personified. I grew up in the 70's and was awed by Ali but the more I watch Joe Louis the more I appreciate the man. I'm not saying he would roll over his fellow ATG's but when you examine him at his best, it's hard to pick a clear winner over him. Like Joe said, "You can run but you can't hide".
The Louis that beat Baer,[ considered the most dangerous fighter around] ,was something to see his precise, accurate ,powerful punches were magnificent that day.
Two pertinent observations. I certainly dont take anything away from Schmelings win. I personaly think that the Joe Louis of the Max Baer fight would have beaten some top 10 all time heavyweights perhaps even dominated them. Schmeling had a tough asignment. You make the observation that Louis's duration as a profesional fighter is misleading and it is. Louyis had put in a lot of ring hours. I would make the point however that you cant cram five years worth of fights into a two year period without disadvantaging the fighter. If you could then everybody would be fighting the top fighter of the division after nine months into their pro career.
Louis himself said that as he had thrashed Baer he thought Schmeling would be cake,he spent too much time on the golf course and in bedrooms ,,turning a deaf ear to Blackburn. He learned his lesson the hard way ,it never happened again.Louis burned for revenge ,he studied the fight and commented "Schmeling hit me with loads of power shots he should have got me out of there earlier ,it won't happen next time."Joe went out to take Schmeling's head off in the return,he told Blackburn ,"If after 3 rds he is still in there ,you better come and get me",.He was going to shoot it all for an early ko ,he predicted a ko in 1 rd to Jimmy Cannon.
Jack Johnson fought Joe Choynsky [67 fights] after his 9th fight and was kod.You speak sense Janitor.
