I haven't seen this match discussed much. It is a difficult one to imagine -- I'm not quite sure how this one would play out. Both men usually came forward, though Liston less adamantly than Louis. Both men are bonafide punchers -- Liston possesses a ramrod totem pole jab, Louis the shortest, most devastating punches in heavyweight history.

    Who ya got?

    Louis wins 2 of 3.

Louis outpoints Liston & K.O.'s Liston in two fights.

Liston TKO's Louis in the the remaining fight.

First off, I rate both men as proper technicians, Louis a shade better, but it's hard to win standing in front of Sonny. Honestly, I might lean towards Liston by TKO.

I wonder how successful Louis would be slipping Sonny's punches. Despite the first Schmeling bout, I always thought Louis was pretty good at barely slippin' shots, and while fast for his size, Liston didn't have blitzing handspeed. Could be key.

I don't know. On one hand, Louis was vulnerable to getting decked early and this would be a bad thing against such a fast starter with Liston's finishing ability. On the flipside, Sonny didn't like men who stood up to him and Louis had more heart, guts, and technical punching ability than almost anyone I can think of...

My heart goes for Louis, but anyone can take it on the right night.

Liston. Too much power and ability. Louis doesn't have the chin.

It's hard to win standing in front of Joe Louis too, though. :)

I think it could go both ways, but Louis is more proven and has faster hands; based on that i'd back him.

I'd guess that Louis would get Liston late over 15.

Over 12 it's very close with my guess being that Liston would hang on for a decision.

That's a remarkable opinion considering Liston never went past 12 while Louis is one of the most economical fighters in history who went 15 rounds on multiple occasions.

I would expect Louis to win it and I would expect the deciding factor to be his handspeed, with most other variables being either similar or comparable.

The main advantage that Liston brings to the table for my money is ability to anticipate and react to situations more quickly. If I am wrong in my prediction this will almost certainly be the reason.

Liston is my number 2 or 3 all time H2H heavyweight, behind Ali and sometimes Lewis. His great jab, long reach, power, size, strength and sturdiness make him difficult to over look.

Joe may have the better handspeed but his slow footspeed allows Sonny to keep him on the end of his damaging jab and booming right hands. Sonnys hooks and uppercuts also mean that Joe pays at midrange too.

Sonny Liston matches up well with Joe Louis.... Liston was bigger and stronger than Joe Louis was, but Louis was quicker handed and a better combination puncher.... HMMMM!! This fight would start off slowly with BOTH dudes cautiously jabbing at each other.... Jab for jab, BOTH are masters there..... HMMMMM! I like Joe Louis, but I was always interested in Sonny Liston more.... BOTH were before my prime-time induction into the world of Boxing..... Okay, I got balls, I say Liston lands a bomb or two early and stops Joe Louis in a time machine............ Louis NEVER fought a talented animal like Sonny Liston...... I'd never bet a dime on this dream fight.....

    Partial-
Joe Louis, by unanimous decision or late stoppage...in my opinion.
