spent a day watching my duran collection over christmas and that was the second best performance i saw. slips, combos, body work every thing was on point. i'd still give whitaker a decent chance though, based on styles alone
I like Foster, but am not sure what you have seen to sway your pick...not criticizing, more curious than anything else. I am not sure I could pick him over Tunney, Loughran, Moore, Charles, Spinks and co. either in H2H, or to present more problems for others in this division than those names. Not saying he couldn't, it just wouldn't be my pick. I am not sure if he is adaptable to enough different styles as some of his ATG LHW peers.
he was unbeatable at his weight in his era. agree and i'm not sold that he's unbeatable (or highly favoured) in other eras
I couldn't bring myself to pick just one so I chose 3 per weight class with my bold pick as my first choice. Heavyweight: Mike Tyson Muhammad Ali Lennox Lewis Light Heavyweight: Roy Jones Jr. Michael Spinks Ezzard Charles Middleweight: Sugar Ray Robinson Carlos Monzon Harry Greb Welterweight: Sugar Ray Leonard Sugar Ray Robinson Thomas Hearns Lightweight: Roberto Duran Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pernell Whitaker Featherweight: Henry Armstrong Willie Pep Salvador Sanchez Bantamweight: Eder Jofre Carlos Zarate Panama Al Brown Flyweight: Haven't watched enough of this division for a proper assessment.
He's a beast. Like tommy hearns of the lhw division but only he's not up against anyone called sugar. One of the best jabs in the division, maybe the hardest hitter, solid chin, good fundamentals. Providing he's willing to clinch early on I struggle to see him losing.
Ali- This ranking has remained constant, although Louis and Holmes are also fine suggestions at the weight. Charles- Moore and Foster are easier to master, by my estimation. Charles is just supremely skilled, and very difficult to beat. Spinks would be my fallback. Monzon- The man was frustratingly good. I have him soundly defeating the next most popular vote in Hagler. Robinson- Perhaps the very definition of a pound-for-pound, head-to-head great. He is the traditional choice here, and rightfully so. Pass- Lightweight is such an unbelievable division that it would be irresponsible - maybe even impossible- for me to produce a single name, especially when none of the usual offerings are particularly fresh in my mind. Pep- And this is peculiar since I don't regard Saddler as highly as others do. Jofre- It gets a bit shaky, but I'll stick with what I know. Canto- Again I have to admit my ignorance, but from what I've seen, Canto belongs at the top- over the previously mentioned Wolgast and Perez.
I'm still struggling with lhw and mw. Lhw is between foster and jones Mw is between robinson and jones.
In greatness i'd be tempted to say it's between monzon, hagler and greb. But h2h I wouldn't like to pick on someone I haven't watched myself. That being said the picture painted by the write ups of his drubbing of tunney is impressive.
My bolded picks I'm certain on now. the rest I haven't made my mind up on: HW: Ali LHW: Jones/Foster MW: Robinson WW: Robinson LW: Whitaker FW: Armstrong BW: Canizales/Jofre FLW: Canto
like canto down there. possibly the best jab of the 70s not sold on robinson at middle though. the thread about he and jones was great but frankly, to inconclusive to solidify a pick at that weight. especially as i can't pick between the hagler of sibson vs robinson of lamotta 4
