The other day someone started a thread on here asking who would win at lightweight between Floyd Mayweather Jr, Shane Mosley, and Manny Pacquiao. I thought this was a bit unfair considering Pacquiao has only had 1 single fight at that weight, and won his first world title down at flyweight (whereas Mayweather won his at super-featherweight and Mosley won his at light). This led me to think though: Manny is a five-weight world champion. At what weight was he best? This is a very difficult question to answer with Manny, far more difficult than with the vast majority of other fighters, as Manny is now a completely different fighter to what he was like at flyweight and super-bantamweight. Over the past few years, Manny has improved and developed at a rapid rate. His defence, technique and skills are all far far better now than when his raw speed and power allowed him to annihilate world pound-for-pound number 3 peak ATG Marco Antonio Barrera. H2H, what has been Manny's best weight? And, H2H, how good was he at this weight? Who would you have him beating from the last 20 years, or of all-time? HATERS NOT WELCOME! :nono My own opinion is he was at his best at super-featherweight (from Morales II to Marquez II). Could Manny be one of the best super-featherweights in the history of that division? Would he make the top 5 alongside guys like Arguello, Mayweather and Chavez?
122 for me. Overall, even though his technical skills are better now than then. i don't know much about the greats from the past, but imo he would have wiped the floor with Vasquez, Rafa, Juanma, Caballero, and Molitor. Easily.
122 easily. His key attributes are speed and power, and that is where they were most effective. He was still good at 130, but his power was noticeably diminished.
I would say he is at his overall best right now, but since this is a h2h comparison, and being that he is not fighting in his ideal division, then I would say 130(em2 version not the weight drained jmm2 version). This was when Pac still had a significant speed and power advantage compounded by added technical skills, as well as big fight experience while still feeling comfortable at the weight. In terms of physical peak, (ie. speed and power advantage over his opponents) I would say was at 122 where he didnt need anything else but those two attributes to ko opponents.
He's at his best nowadays skill-wise, but as the total package, probably 130. I disagree with those choosing 122, solely on the basis of his lack of skills. His size and power were very formidable there (though I think his speed in general is overrated, though still an asset), but he had yet to develop into the fighter he'd later become in terms of skill-set. I only see him getting stopped by the top guys throughout history at 122 such as Gomez, Fenech, Pintor, etc. Overall, his prime is a difficult one to place, as his skill-set is still improving, though he gets less effective as he moves up in weight with the deterioration of his size, speed, and power. I'd say he's in his prime now if not for the fact that he's straining his body too much.
