"Prime Tyson" is the biggest myth in boxing build by media hype.

People talk as if he blasted out everyone who fought him and brutally KOd them.

In reality, we're talking about a guy who went the distance with James Tillis, Mitch Green, James Smith and Tony Tucker.

If they could "survive" this mythical "prime Tyson", what makes you think that someone like Wladimir Klitschko wouldn't win a comfortable decision against him or possibly KO him in late rounds? Tyson wouldn't get past Wlad's jab, he plays perfectly in his style.

 

Douglas was a poor man's Holmes (if that)

There's no need. Obviously nothing can be proved either way. You could equally say "no one beats a prime Tyson", and you probably would. :yep
My point, my opinion, is that Tyson looked beatable in his "prime" (although few people at the time were saying 21 was his prime, then reckoned he'd be better at 25) and did in fact lose to Douglas at 23, therefore who knows who else he'd lose to.

 

Can't use the Douglas fight, man. You have to use Tyson at his best. Anything after 1988 is less than civilized.

 

If you take a 22 year old Tyson, no matter how talented, that's still an inexperienced 22 year old boxer who was largely untested against the elite. Experience counts for a lot in boxing and an ATG material boxer would figure him out eventually and take the later rounds. Tyson was an explosive fighter but he would fade as the fight goes on.

As I said, "prime Tyson" was not this mythical being who just ran through everybody and knocked them out with first hard punch, in reality he went the distance with guys like Mitch Green and James Tillis.

We can talk about what could have been if Tyson didn't go bat**** crazy and worked hard instead, but he's not the only boxer who didn't fulfill his potential.
