I've never been much of a Calz fan, and probably never will though you cannot ignore his accomplishments and obvious skill and commitment to his craft. Every great fighter has his flaws....some more blatiant than others. Calz has beaten all that have been placed in his path though I do question how highly rated some of his victories are proclaimed to be. I was neither impressed nor was I shocked at the outcomes of the Jones and Hopkins fights, both men have accomplished more in their respective careers and both where far seperated from their primes when facing Calz. I can say the same when he faced Eubanks, but I can't ignore his utter dominance of his career long division and its not his fault the competition was well limited during his succesful tenure. Joe will go down as HOF and possibly become an ATG is his status justified? there will always be naysayers and yes men. I for one have wanted Joe to face a fighter of Chad Dawsons skill set and freshness for quite sometime now....I was totally against him facing the likes of Manfredo, Hopkins and Jones and rate his preformances subpar because he's capable of giving a stiff challenge to the likes of Chad. Now some will say I'm just like the others throwing more fighters in the pot to face Joe and he will beat them and then you will request another hero. I'm not looking for a hero because Joe is not my enemy but do I enjoy his style....no....do I rate him as a dominate fighter in this era.....yes....Question is would Joe have beaten the greats that graced his weight class in their primes? some claim he would I say there is no way he survives the likes of Spinks, or Archie Moore....can't say much about Langford because I've never watched the man fight, Greb, Fitz, Hagler, ....Hell throw Tommy Hearns in the mix. But all in all I agree give Joe C credit for doing what he must and that's winning.
I know its great that Europe has got some great fighters at the moment and as a brit i love it, but don't forget that the US has provided us with great entertainment over the years. I mean look at the 80's for example, all the most exciting fighters were american, e.g. leonard, hearns, hagler, tyson. i mean these were the guys who made us fans of boxing in the first place
Are you kidding why even post with your overly ethocentric antipathy. "America is going down the hill" how long have you lived here and how much do you actually know about boxing? some of the greatest fights this sport has given us has included an American fighter. America was a country built with the blood and sweat of dozens of ethnic groups...come on and grow up with this biased bull****.
Good to see there are logical thinkers across sea's. I think we all fall short of keeping the fight game far away from emotion but when your talking boxing it falls on the same level of pride that soccer fans express (or Football as they call it around the world)
I agree mate, Dont get me wrong, most of the time when a Brit beats a US fighter I love it, and I bet when one of yours beats a Brit most of the time you feel the same, theres nowt wrong with having a bit of pride in your country, but that does'nt diminish the respect i have for American fighters, i mean just look for the most of the time ive been a boxing fan, beating a highly rated American for a british fighter is seen as a point in which youve reached the pinnacle. Weve just got to face it, on these forums theres are too many Nobs from both the US and Britain.
It's been said before, but what it comes down to is the difference between boxing fans and fanboys. There is a huge difference and many don't know which side they're on. A fanboy is someone who can never admit a weakness about their hero. And they'll spew all sorts of bile and tortured logic tearing other fighters down just to elevate try and elevate their boxer. But the truth is that fanboys never convince each other of anything. They don't listen and they don't make sense when they speak. A true boxing fan appreciates talent, no matter whether they personally like or support the boxer or not. For example, I never liked Floyd as a personality and never even cared all that much for his style of fighting. But I would be a ****ing moron not to admit that he's among the best in recent history. In other words, I can say that I don't like him and would like to see him get beat. But to try and convince others that he sucks would say more about me and my knowledge of boxing.
you get bitter people in all walks of life, and its good in a way that calzaghe has upset these bitter americans in such devastating fashion!Although not all are american (see pacfan)
not a bad post :good i think we all have both fanboy and boxing fan in us, just some have fanboy more than others!!and most of those are american.....:yep
I can see where your coming from, but personally for me having pride in a boxer and football team is nearly the same, I mean for me supporting a british fighter (e.g calzaghe) and my football team(Leeds Utd, please don't take the ****:hey ), when they do well, i feel a part of the sucess, but when they fail, im generally upset as i feel ive lost. I mean take it from me the city where i'm from in England is one of the biggest but has hardly produced any of Britains greatest fighters, so we hardly get to celebrate in the fact that one of our own as suceeded, (the best two in my memory are Henry Wharton (failed in 3 attempts at world title at super middle) and Crawford Ashley (failed in 2 world title attempts) so have to rely on other british fighter
Devastating fashion? well I can say a shot to peices Jones was made to look......hmmmmm.......shot to peices. While Joe's fight against Hopkins was hardly one sided but clear cut nonetheless. Lacy? while I admit I supported the young stud every part of me that studied boxing knew that if Claz's chin was any bit as good as I thought it was Joe he would outbox a man that let Ruben Williams tee off on his head for about half the fight. Amazing how when you look at these fighters in perspective the knowlege of the fight game is enlightened.
