The Hopkins that fought last night would beat everybody but Calzaghe and just maybe Dawson and Kessler.
More bull****. Calzagh/Hopkins was on regular HBO and didn't even sell out. Mayweather/De La Hoya was on PPV, broke the record for PPV buys, sold out in a matter of hours, and set the live gate record. You tell me which fight the public wanted more. Many people considered DLH to be the top JMW. Furthermore, Calzaghe never cleaned out **** until he was in his mid 30's. He spent most of his career defending his WBO belt. Floyd is only 31 and is alread a 6 time champion. Tell me how the hell Floyd fighting DLH is cherry picking but Calzaghe fighting Hopkins isn't.
Accurate post, Floyd is a fighter who takes the path of least resistence. He will never be stepping in the ring with Miguel Cotto, his worst stylistic nemesis. He also doesn't compare to his previous era contemporaries. Outclassing Hatton at 147 means very little, Hatton himself has even been on the decline from his life style, the close victory over DLH means very little, other than boosting his profile. The Calzaghe victory over Hopkins means WHAT? Very little. No bias.
I don't think the two of you are that far off- your talking general public and he is talking boxing public. The boxing public (myself included) wanted this fight. The general public could give a ****.
Did the public really want Hatton vs. Mayweather over Cotto vs. Mayweather? Let me follow up little buddy, do they want a DLH rematch and a Hatton rematch? Every poll that was put up before Hopkins/Calzaghe on every internet forum, boxing website that asked what fight they wanted next for Calzaghe, it was a shutout for Hopkins vs. Calzaghe. Plus Hopkins called him out to begin with and they made the fight happen, no cherry picking what so ever. Floyd's 31, but he won't be around much longer, or he simply won't be doing much, as he's already wasting prime years here when he could have been cementing himself more so. It's all about money. Floyd's also in the position where he could make any fight in the world happen if he wanted to, other fighters are not, he's been in this position since 2005, look at his choices overall and look at his continuing choices, disgraceful. We'll see what Calzaghe does next.
Joe had already picked up at least one fan in the US (or rather I should say, cemented himself as forever worthy of fandom) after his magical performance against Kessler. Last night was not vintage Joe, but he got the job done and ought to have finally shut up all the whining about not fighting top-rated American names on American soil. Accurate scorecards should not be very close.
Well, seeing bias is perhaps a little hard. One of your points was - People were actually calling for the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight. I agree. But at the same time, people were also calling for the Hatton-PBF fight. But because it's PBF, it doesn't matter right? You consider Hatton useless, but your thoughts of Hopkins PRE Calzaghe was quite similar. I see that you still maintain this. So ultimately, there's not too much difference to the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight and the PBF-Hatton fight, OUTSIDE of the dominant performance of PBF. You then say you doubt Calzaghe will fight a useless fight next, despite MANY rumours of a fight with Roy Jones. A fight with Jones is a WORSE fight then a PBF-Dela Hoya rematch, to me (I outlined a thread on this) Floyd fights the path of least resistance is bull ****, especially in comparison to Calzaghe. That was Calzaghe for 10 years (fighting at home protected in Wales against the Pudwills and Jimnezes's of the world), where during this time, Floyd created an ALL TIME resume cleaning out a NUMBER of divisions (fighting the top guys)... You fail to mention that Floyd was unable to fight the best at 140 (on no fail of his own) and beat the LINEAL champ at 147 by beating the man who beat the man. I don't count going for the undisputed champ as ducking Margarito. But that's just me. I can see how some do. Floyd's only made one defence, against the no. 1 fighter from 140 (which, of no fail of his own, he was unable to do when he was there). After Dela Hoya, he has no excuse to not fight Cotto. But you act as if he's been "ducking" Cotto for years. Cotto's only just emerged as the OFFICIAL challenger. Yes, Floyd must fight him. But he didn't need to have done it last year.
Hatton would have counted at 140, he was totally ineffective at 147 and PROVEN so by the fight vs. Collazo, plus he had shown decline did not even get to fight his normal fight due to Cortez. Now I don't blame Cortez for not allowing that grappling from Hatton, but Mayweather was equally as guilty. And Lacy does count, he was the #3 in the division for a unification match. Hatton was coming up a division where he had shown proven ineffectiveness. Most of the top 10 at Welter would KO Hatton easily.
It is well known that Eubanks took the fight with JC at short notice and was originally prepaping for a fight at light heavy. Also he was ill with the flu, washed up and gun shy after the Watson fight. None of this is JC fault but it has tainted his win a little bit!
