Had Sanchez moved up after his win over Azumah Nelson, and Arguello moved down to fight Sanchez rather than go up to chase Pryor, who would've won this classic showdown??

Salvador Sanchez vs Alexis Arguello @ 130lbs in 1983

Not sure how strong Arguello would have been at that wieght by then to be honest.I'd take Arguello at lightweight

I'm in the minority that take Arguello best vs best as well

I take a prime 130 Arguello over just about anyone. But in '83, assuming he could cut down to 130, I think he'd be drained and a little past his prime. I'd favor Sanchez by decision.

Sanchez takes him to school, any time, any place, any weight. Arguello isn't in the same skill class

    I think, Alexis Arguello.

He would have to work really hard, though.

I just don't like Sanchez' aggressive counterpunching style against a one-punch sharpshooter like Arguello

Sanchez takes too many flush rights imo.I think arguello will land the heavier punches, enough of them to take a 3 or 4 point decision. He'll get hit a lot himself, but i see him pushing sanchez on the defensive a bit too much for sal to take control of the fight,.

I think Sanchez's defense is tight, your assuming Sanchez won't adapt and that his chin can't handle the power and that Arguello will be able to time enough shots. I think Sanchez can fight a safety first fight, simply boxing and moving for the duration not taking many but when he does having the chin to withstand them. Arguello wouldnt handle the speed, movement, timing, and superior skill of Sanchez too well. Sanchez also has the frame to add weight nicely and would probably have ended up at lightweight. Arguello has been outboxed by lesser boxers

Arguello clearly was in the same skill class. He was just a different style of skill class.

Arguello not in Sanchez's class? While Sanchez can move well he was no Pedrosa in terms of lateral movement.I agree that Sanchez had faster hands then Arguello but Arguello throws those short straight punches. And lets not forget Arguello's body shots which would slow sanchez down.

At this stage of Arguello's career, He was a big enough fighter to not have to go down in weight for this fight. If Sanchez had wanted Arguello, in all most likelyhood he would have had to go all the way to lightweight 135 Lbs.

Sanchez was going to fight Arguello at 135. He had been talking of the match and Arguello probably would have waited for him. At this weight (this was never going down at 130) i take Arguello.
