In 1983 I'd have taken a peaking Sanchez over a shop-worn Arguello at 130. I'd have taken Sanchez over a young Arguello at 126 as well. A prime Arguello at 130 may've been a different story however, and above that weight we just don't know how Sanchez would've dealt, even though he seemed to clearly have the frame for it.

Oh man... a battle between two technically sound boxers, both all-time greats... damn... I say draw.

Huge fan of both fighters. I'd take Sanchez, he handled everyone thrown at him in big fights pretty convincingly. This fight would be up there with the Gomez bout as far as being a big event, and a lot of people forget that Gomez was a fantastic boxer, not just heavyhanded. If Sanchez could handle Gomez skills and power, I think he would do the same with Arguello. Arguello's longer than Gomez but Gomez was faster and I think they had even power.

You're pretty far off here. Gomez was a natural 122 pounder who was never as effective in any way above that weight, though he was still a very good fighter. Sanchez was clearly the bigger man in their bout as well. How is there any corrolation between a 122 pound Gomez moving up to face the bigger Sanchez and Sanchez moving up one or two weights to face a bigger, more powerful puncher?

P4P Gomez and Arguello may've had comparable power, but there's a very clear difference between great power at 122 (good at 126) and great power at 130 (very good at 135).

For the record, at LW, I say Arguello has some tough moments, but comes through to win a SD, nearly stopping Sanchez late in the fight (15 rounds) with some devestating combinations.

But Sal was too tough to be stopped IMO. His chin was brilliant.

130 was too light for Arguello to make in 1983.... By '82 & '83, Arguello was battling Aaron Pryor at weights of 138 to 140 pounds on the morning of them fights back then.... While Arguello was not as strong as Pryor was at roughly 140 pounds, Alexis Arguello was also lean and ripped at them weights in '83....... NOW! Perhaps 135 could've been a possibility in 1983.?.? I'll pick the younger and quicker Sal Sanchez in 1983 at 135 pounds over the aging and slower Alexis Arguello....

Like he took Pat Cowdell and Patrick Ford to school?

You bring up Arguello's trouble with boxers, but what about Sanchez's trouble with lanky technicians?

More like you're assuming Sanchez can adapt, that he can handle the extreme height/reach advantages of Arguello, and that Arguello will only win if Sanchez's chin can't hold up to his power.

But Sanchez will easily handle the height, range, two-fisted knockout power, and technical skill of Arguello?

Or he could've been a total flop at the higher weight just like Gomez and Zarate before him.

Not really. He's been outboxed by lesser fighters but they were not necessarily lesser pure boxers than Sanchez.

Besides, using that logic, Sanchez has been down against much lesser punchers than Arguello.

Assuming Arguello wasnt weight drained then I believe the natural size would be a factor late on... even tho Sal had inhuman stamina, he is still going to feel Alexis power in the championship rds + Sal may lose a bit of speed himself carrying the extra weight as almost every fighter that isnt struggling to make their current weight does. I think Sanchez was & felt natural at 126, Alexis best weight was 130 & with his 5`10 height, he easily stepped up to LWT.

Arguello W15 Sanchez..... definitely at 135, likely at 130 but AA loses at 126 even tho we know that the fight would never happen at FWT.

    No he wouldnt have.

Chavez was close to prime at 130 (his absolute peak being 135) & he is naturally the bigger guy + its doubtfull that Sanchez will be 100% as effective at 130 as he never struggled at 126.

Chavez would pull away down the stretch for a close but clear UD.

    IMO

I think Alexis would beat Salvador by UD 15, but not at 130, because he wouldn't move back down to that weight.
