Had he been an American would he have been bigger than what he is today in terms of popularity?

Would he be a heavyweight doing what he's doing?

If not, how is his public persona and how articulate is he? How good is he at speaking and dealing with the press, giving them the answers they like?

The non-heavyweights in recent years who were huge stars in the US, Leonard and De La Hoya, were very good in this regard.

Mind you neither Oscar no Ray were quite as huge as Tyson was.

If Pac was born in the US, he would've turned pro at 22, moved up safely and would've challenged for a world title at 26, which was the time he faced Morales for the 1st time. That's 3 division championships less and no MAB fight.

Pac is very popular in the US, but much more popular intertnationally because of his pre-26 achievements and warrior mentality. Had he skipped those early years and the hard work up to the top it wouldn't be that same amazing story, and he'd also be very much less experienced.

Pac is as big as Floyd in the US despite being a Filipino because fans appreciate real warriors. I don't think being born in the US would've produced the same story. He HAD to come from that low so going THAT high could look so damn amazing.

    Of course he would!!!

An american passport makes all the difference at times. Why do you think a limited and harmless heavy like Johnson gets a shot at Vitaly's title?

    Maybe not.

You have to remember that pac as a filipino living in philippines is backed up by the whole philippines as well as filipinos around the world. Boxing fans or not, I would say 99.999% of filipinos know and like pac.

I dont think the filipinos would be as insterested if he was born in american. Likewise hes probably aint that interested in people living in the philippines to gain popularity.

    Dunno, pass...

He's transcending the sport as it is! I can't speak for his popularity in the US but I can tell you that right now his star/drawing power is ridiculous.

Here in Australia boxing is not a popular sport, it generally needs charismatic/controversial personalities to thrive; hence the abundance of Anthony Mundine threads in the Aussie forum. We need a Tyson or a Kostya Tszyu to get people watching, the sport alone is not enough. Manny is generating that kind of interest as we speak and it's pretty amazing to see. When I caught the Manny/Cotto fight I saw more people at the pub than I'd seen since Tszyu/Hatton, most of them spewing nonsense stories of how Manny would finish him in 2-3 rounds. They clearly knew nothing about the sport but that was part of the spectacle. All these casual fans loved talking about this ten-foot invincible warrior from the Philippines who could KO twenty men with one blow!

i don't think it's possible to tell. there are just too many factors involved. however, pac won his title with a middle ko of sasakul tyson won his first title by knocking out the champ in a round. devastatingly. i don't think anyone could be as big as tyson was in his era.

Pac would be unbeaten if he was raised in the USA/UK.

I think its better that he was born in the philippines and knew what its like being poor. Thats probably gave him more determination, the fighter mentality, the character, you name it, which attract fans around the world.

Without all that put together he would probably be just another good boxer from the US.

People often forget there is a world outside of the U.S/U.k. Manny Pacquiao is absolutely huge in Asia. Had he been born in the U.S.A his popularity and circumstance would have been entirely different.

A statement of reality...until they're is a dominant KO artist from the US at Heavyweight, boxing will stay on the sidelines to the casual sports fan. Even though it is doing better these past five years thanks to rise of champs like Mayweather and Pavlik (don't laugh, his big wins against Miranda and Taylor got a lot of average fans to take notice) the sport has gained doesn't look like it's dying in the light of MMA anymore.
