Had Pavlik not faced anyone with lateral movement before Hopkins?

I was re watching Hopkins vs Pavlik today and I heard Emanual Steward say that Pavlik would have trouble with guys who use lateral movement. Then Merchant responds that Pavlik hasn't fought anyone who can do that. Is that true? How could a guy get to championship level in boxing without facing even a single slick boxer? :?

It's evident he'll always have problems with guys that move laterally because ...

1- He doesn't cut off the ring well enough
2- He doesn't move his feet fast enough
3- He needs to plant his feet in order to through his shots

He hasn't faced anyone Elite with that package, Taylor is very fast but he is extremely flawed, I wouldn't be surprised if Lacy ressurects his career in 2 weeks.

Personally I think Kelly is one of those guys who will always have trouble with slick boxers. Mediocre hand and foot speed is something you can partially make up for with good timing, but timing will only take you so far. Plus, he is not the most coordinated guy in the world. I predicted over a year ago that KP would lose his zero to a slick boxer at LHW. No way in hell did I expect that to happen in 2008 against Hopkins, but it certainly did!

That does not mean he will always lose to every slick boxer, but guys who move well and move a lot, will probably always give him some trouble.

So the ONLY guy that have used lateral movement against him is Taylor?

they only slick fighter he really fought was hopkins, everyone else was just regular fighters.miranda and taylor were good athletes and big and strong, but there styles were taylor made for pavlik.its not that was to do what hopkins did, so even if there was a blue print made on how to beat pavlik its still gone to be a easier said then done !

i dout that other guys could be that effective against him at 160, and you know he will learn a few things after the hopkins fight, that will make it even harder for the guys he fights.

Another thing to consider is that Hopkins was not only slick, he was the superior boxer on the inside so even when Pavlik tried to impose his will and get inside as he would against a slickster, he was at a disadvantage. One would think that against most slicksters, Pavlik would have the advantage on the inside.

Hopkins is special. I don't think just because any guy can move a little and somewhat slick that he can beat Pavlik.

You made a VERY good statement right there. Consider this; to this very day Alexis Arguello has a stigma that he had trouble with slick boxers. The truth is he lost to one slick boxer one time, and a few years later he blew the guy out in a rematch. Now I'm not trying to put Pavlik in the same class with Arguello. I'm just saying that sometimes guys get a certain reputation, and no matter what happens, they never shake it off. I'm also saying that having trouble with slick boxers is NOT the same thing as always losing to them.
