Joey Maxim with his 18% KO rate was an ideal champion for a smaller fighter moving up to challenge. Robinson had a big frame for a middleweight so even though he gave up two inches of height he maintained an inch of reach advantage. So basically Joey Maxim hit like a middleweight and had no real advantage over Robinson in terms of size or strength.

Archie Moore, on the other hand has a 60% KO record fighting up to heavyweight and into his forties. He would also have a two and a half inch reach advantage. Moore's power would just be too much for Robinson.

Whenever you have a champion with a weak punch, talented smaller guys are going to feel confident to challenge them. I figure that's why Tommy Loughran had to contend with Greb and Walker.

Ray's decision to take on Maxim reminds me of Roy Jones' decision to take on Ruiz. Sure he's jumping up to a higher weight class but he's taking on a sure bet type of opponent, one that really doesn't pose much danger and can be beaten decisively, if not handily. Moore would've been too dangerous an opponent for Robinson just as a Tyson or Holyfield or Bowe type fighter would've been for Jones.

I just wished Ray had won, if Jersey Joe Walcott had beaten Marciano, would've liked to have see Robinson and Walcott go at it.

    Do you hate Robinson?

He was 157 for the Maxim fight. I have no desire to see what Walcott would do to a middleweight, he might end up killing the man.

No hate for the Sugarman, despite what I've heard and read about him as a man.He was a great fighter, but, maybe, under the right circumstances, something special might have happened, and he could've pulled off something magical.:deal
