I think Buster Douglas was always pretty good, and since about 1986 was a world class contender. I agree, there was no such creature as unbeatable "Tokyo Douglas". The thing is, he had the tools to beat Mike Tyson and that's what he went out and did. I don't know why people have trouble getting their heads around that.

As for Tyson, he was very good, he was great. But he clearly wasn't as good as the hype surrounding him which built him up to invincible and mythic proportions. If he was ever as good as the hype he would have beat Douglas, even on a bad night.

The way you tell it, I guess you knew Tyson was going to lose to Douglas then ?

Tyson had no chance to follow up quickly as the bell rang. Douglas was definitely on a mission and showed determination like never before, or after.

Douglas wasn't seriously hurt, it's clear to see. He came out the next round and proceeded to batter Tyson.

I think Douglas was solidly hurt personally. I really don't think he meant to beat the count by about 0.5 of a second. Kudo's to him coming out next round with the effects shaken off. Great effort.

It does look like Douglas was pretty much clear-headed as soon as he went down, he slammed the canvas in frustration, listened to the count, even looked over to ringside (at timekeeper or cornerman, I assume).
The commentary team made out he was out on his feet when the bell rang but that seems like hyperbole.
It was a terrific punch but Douglas was obviously in good enough condition to take it.
Either way, the fight in its entirety was ridiculously one-sided.

I still believe anyone of them would have beat tyson that night. Douglas completely outboxed him. The thing is with tyson though he could be outboxed at times even with his head movement etc he was always gonna be the smaller man. Was always a bit flat footed.

But if we put all of the reasons or excuses or whatever you want to call them to one side.

On the night tyson had little head movement. Little will to win. Looked lethargic. Even put them to one side tho.

Heres the big difference....go back and watch any fight tyson had prior to say bruno. Listen to his punches land. Even commentators used to comment on it being different to anyone else. It made a thudding noise. Now go back and watch the douglas fight. Theres no speed or power behind his punches. Almost every punch he delivered made a thudding noise usually. It was missing the whole night in the douglas fight.

And it was that punch power/speed of punch that really made tyson special. There was four things that tyson really excelled at. Punch power. Speed of delivery of the punches. Head movement and combination punching. Everyone of them was missing that night.

But the most important one missing and the one that would have changed the game that night was the power...it just wasnt there. We can say douglas nuetralised him but the guys that claim it was tyson at his best...do we have an explanation for his lack of power. Where did the thudding noise go?

Tyson looked like he d rather be anywhere else but a ring that night. Buster just caught him on the right nite. If it wasnt for being wary of his power doiglas would have and could have taken him out sooner.

Go back and watch him fight tubbs. Think it was a second round ko. Tubbs hits him quite a bit. Gave tyson some frustration. But everytime tyson landed it was a thud. Go back and watch any of his fights...then stick the douglas fight on. The real thing that made him stand out from the rest...the power. Wasnt there that night.

Thats how you know it wasnt just down to a brilliant performance by douglas.

Clear to see. Anyone can check it out for themselves. Guy was a consistantly very hard punching guy. Suddenly against douglas hes punching like mallinaggi. Even the best punches he threw that night werent up to his usual standard. And his usual standard wasnt just hard but consistantly hard. It was the one great thing that overcame his reach/height disadvantage.

Its the one point that stands out. We can say douglas had his number or would always have outboxed him...but we cant really explain how if it was prime tyson or anywhere near that...his power wasnt there. Makes a sham of your argument.

Tyson was beat before he went in the ring...douglas was better than some of his performances cause he pretty much lacked dedication. But there was no special douglas from tokyo. It was a sham of a mike tyson...that douglas then pretty much executed to his credit.

Maybe being In Japan he couldn't get access to the kind of steroids that enabled him to punch so hard in the USA?

I'm just putting it out there just like you have done with the ear test......

Have we checked where the microphones were situated, and have we quizzed the sound engineering team ? I think they might have got their levels wrong, because ...
Did anyone else notice Douglas's punches didn't sound as loud as they did when he KO'd Mike Williams on the Spinks-Tyson undercard ? I swear to God, but I guess with Douglas having the flu and his mother dead and his baby-mother seriously ill, that might have took some sting out of his usual power.

I don't know if the fact that the crowd were noisy as hell, seeing the invincible Tyson become vincible, might have dulled some of the sound either, unlike the Tyson-Tubbs fight where they sat in silence.

    Weird stuff indeed.

Dont just take tubbs as an example. Take any of his fights. One thing about tyson was he always hit like a mule. It was his biggest and most effective equaliser. Even taking the sound out of things. Its clear to see he wasnt punching anywhere like he had. Its not like he was made to miss either. It just wasnt there. Neither was anything else in his game for that matter. We can argue of some of the things saying douglas neatrilised it or whatever. But with his power/speed its hard to claim it was same old tyson that finally got exposed.

Just imo the guy was either completely underprepared or he had depression of some kind...probably both. Looked like he was in a trance half the fight. He was far quicker when he came back from a 3 year lay off against mcneeley. Holyfield. And years after that than he was against douglas.

Watch it then and tell me if thats what happened. Although i hate not giving credit where its due and buster did deserve a lot of credit. But for me anyway...he caught tyson on his worst night. If it wasnt buster it would have been someone else. If it wasnt that nite it wouldnt have been much longer to wait for it to happen.

Tyson was unbelievable when he came through. Cus done a fine job with him. But it was a style that required hard work constantly to keep him effective. As soon as that went out the window...it was only a matter of time. Essentially he was always giving too much advantage away in height/reach. Kind of forced him to be the aggresor at all times. He pretty much had to come in prepared every fight. As soon as he left his trainers prior to bruno it started to fall apart.

What are you exactly trying to say then? I have watched the fight on numerous occasions, Douglas was landing hurtful shots from the opening bell. This would have definitely had an effect on Tyson's power. Of course you're going to say it was his worst night because he got the stuffing knocked out of him.

What i m trying to say is i can show a twelve year old kid fight footage of tyson v any number of opponents then show him against buster...even they d be able to tell he was very much off.

If you cant tell that your either trolling or you dksab.
