This content is protected Great video by a friend of mine looking at Marvin Hagler’s impressive route to the middleweight title.
I just realized I've never seen the Hamani fight before. Brutal, and not made any better by whoever left the ring ropes WAY too loose.
In that set of KOs for some reason it struck me that Marvelous may have produced an inordinately high amount of opponents that got up and wobbled around in a daze (and they were really dazed) before having the fight waved off. Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting. Made sure to give it a like.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler always reminded me of a blue collar champion. As great as he was, he had to earn the title the hard way. As soon as he won it from Alan Minter, he defended his title with pride and tons of heart.
You would be hard pressed to find a better quality of competition 10 in a row win list than Marvs ... He is the boxer that creeps up that ATG list whatever your criteria is ...H2h , activity, competition, resume , title defenses, longevity, cleaning out the divison, twice .... Whatever , marv has it covered
One thing that stood out for me was that, for a man who notoriously had to dislike his opponents before the fight, he was noticeably compassionate and sportsmanlike afterwards. He always seemed to initiate an embrace after a fight, even seeming anxious to talk and draw a line under any enmity. Mind you, the little taps he gave Doug Demmings on the head, after the fight had been stopped when he was consoling him, can't have helped. Leonard said Hagler's hands were 'like concrete'. The man was probably incapable of giving a gentle tap. Poor Doug. It must have been adding injury to injury, and this from a man genuinely consoling him! One other thing which I hadn't appreciated before was just how energetic Marvin was. He couldn't stay still before or after the fight. I love how he runs to the centre of the ring before the start of Round 10 in the Watts fight - he seems hyperactive. But, notwithstanding his constant movement in the ring, the energy he still had after ten hard rounds with Watts and Briscoe shows the kind of stamina he had. Has anyone else said it, yet? How great would a fight with either Valdes or Monzon have been in the middle of this lot? There's a thought. I do wonder if it has ever been done yet (ahem, cough, ahem).
Really enjoyed this thanks for posting the link. Hagler was all business in there wasn't he. I love the clip prior to the Hamani fight when he is asked what he knows about his opponent. Classic Hagler response
