Why not? It's not uncommon. ODLH, Pac, Marquez, Khan, Alvarez, Holyfield, Tyson are guys off the top of my head who have been commonly listed in the range of 2 inches over their real heights. Actually 1.5" is more like it, seems to be a common addition- maybe it's height in a thick pair of shoes? This is all meaningless, you're just comparing his listed height to other listed heights....the listings mean nothing! It's hardly surprising they all line up with each other when they're all exaggerated. When Mike Tyson was supposedly 5'11 1/2" it made sense that Holyfield was 6'2 1/2". Tyson is really 5'10" (this came from his own mouth and seems to be widely accepted now) which makes Holyfield more like 6'1". Frans Botha has always been listed 6'2" but unfortunately he was about 3-4 inches shorter than Sonny Bill Williams who has been listed 6'3" (he's probably a bit taller) throughout his career in rugby and rugby league! But Botha probably looked near enough 6'2" given he was taller than Tyson but a little shorter than Holyfield. I could go on but I'm boring everyone...
I seem to have stirred up some debate! As mentioned, Holyfield is another guy who in my opinion is gratuitously overlisted. I pegged him at 6'1". Honestly I'm not sure about Hearns, I do believe he is probably about 6'1", but really wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't.
Hearns looks 6'-6'1" here next to 5'10" Tyson. He may well have been 6'1". Of course I accept footwear etc can mess up comparisons a bit and pro-wrestlers like Hart are known for wearing big footwear to keep their image up!
Well, from the pictures I have seen if Hearns is not 6'1" 1/2, then every other fighter is shorter, and that just wouldn't be the case.
His bogus listing and Tyson's bogus 5'11 1/2" listing complemented each other well. In reality try 5'10" and 6'1"- and both more likely to be a few mm shorter than a few mm taller...
I think exaggerated listings are more common than accurate listings, not just in boxing but in all sports and even if you just ask someone on the street their height.
Yeah I factored that in. He looks very much the same height as Holyfield. That certainly proves at least one listing is bogus! I just thought of another shocker- David Haye. That guy is 6'3" in his dreams.
you wouldn't have every fighter in every division and era lying about height. Even when Tommy fought guys like Shannon Landberg which was his last fight in 2006, Landberg was about 6-2 and Tommy was about his height.
6'3 1/2" To me Hearns doesn't look like one of the big liars of the sport. I don't see 6'1 1/2" though. More like a half inch the other way if anything. But it's no biggy. Still interested as to how Hagler looks the same height as Qawi though- was Dwight the first boxer to list himself 4 inches shorter than his real height:?
Hagler was a bit taller than Duran who was about 5"6 I think Hagler shades over 5"8, Tyson was 5"9, Holyfield 6"1 Quawi was 5"6 , some of these guys wear heals to make them look thinner, Hagler is Italian now so I'm sure he is in style
Tyson is probably 5'10" but if there's any movement on that it's into the 5'9 and change range. If you're interested (bit of a niche/weird interest I know) there's a page discussing Tyson's height at celebheights dot com. He has a recent pic with the sitemaster who has had his own height very precisely measured and is very obsessive/an excellent judge on the subject.
