Hagler-Hopkins

Hagler's chin is a given ,is Hopkins?
Hopkins was dropped twice by 20 fight Mercado ,who never kod anyone of note.
How do you know Hagler couldnt finish the job?

 

Hopkins was KD'd twice by Mercado at high altitude. He spanked Mercado in a rematch under different conditions. Who else has ever even visibly hurt him at mw or lhw?? Not Trinidad, not Pavlik, not Tarver, not Roy Jones. I don't know Hagler couldn't finish the job same as you don't know he could, this is a hypothetical discussion, but having seen all of Hopkins's fights from 1993 onwards and almost all of Marvin's world title fights, my genuine and considered opinion is that there is more chance of Hagler growing a mullet in between rounds than there is of either man stopping the other.

Hagler was more professional than to just go for the kill - not that I think he could get it or that it wouldn't hand Hops an advantage on certain levels. With Hearns he did that as a calculated risk....he rolled the dice instead of trying to box with a man that at that point in his waning career could very well have outboxed him. Hagler wasn't a simpleton...he would approach Hopkins tactically.

I do a lot of reading around the web. I wouldn't have asked the question if I had found any significant amount of examples. Smacking your forehead and suggesting that I don't read is not any sort of proper response to my question.

There's plenty of examples of overrating Hopkins in this thread, some so extreme as to ridiculously claim that Hopkins was Hagler's superior in every category. I read one on Hagler I think goes a bit overboard (Hagler was much better than Hopkins, but not light years). Where are the others?

 

i really mis worded that what i menat was Hagler would have that extra fire in his belly the extra venom in his shots if he was wound up

could you imagine goody petronelli with the razor trying to shave it off and him going back into the next round with half a mullet. lol

i think Hagler could stop an agressive Hopkins but it would be after a long war of attrition and plenty of body work but i think abit more mature but less physical Hopkins would be clever and adjust his game plan but still lose a UD

 

I understand. Yes, Hops would need to play his games carefully. Still, Hagler, at his very smoothest, very well could have outpointed Hopkins in a close contest.

My point is that this would be a close contest and not the route or blowout so many like to parrot.

Read around some more. Hagler is more often than not spoken of as some invincible force of nature these days whereas I well remember how he was talked about in and around the last three years of his reign.

Sorry mate, I didn't see this post today hence my late reply.

I think Hopkins was a better boxer than the 4 men who were as big as him and a better boxer than the 3 men who were as strong as him, therefore Marvin's wins over some guys who can equal Hopkins in some ways but not all do not prove anything IMO.

Who did Hopkins ever fight at 160 in Marvin's league? No-one.

By the same token, did Marvin ever beat a better middleweight than Hopkins? I would also say no, he did not.


Marvin fought in a stronger era and so has a stronger middleweight resume. Leaving that aside and concentrating on how a fight between them would transpire, I think peak Hopkins could beat him in the ring.

 

Well thats a very considered and reasonable reply. I too , think Hopkins could beat Hagler , I don't think he would, but I would not bet my house on it.

 

Reverse those names and you have my feelings entirely mate! Like I said earlier, a lot would depend on if the ref was one of those who would permit Hopkins to hit and hold, and a lot would depend on if Hopkins could use his own jab effectively against someone with a jab as good as Marvin's, and those are two very big if's. Anyone saying this would be an easy win either way is in dreamland IMO. I have enjoyed this thread though, two great fighters and it would be a fascinating clash.

 

the only fight i have saw of hopkins vs a southpaw was against calzaghe how does he generally do against southpaws in his prime because that could be a HUGE factor
