BENNIE GEORGINO, boxing trainer: "I put Robinson, LaMotta and Monzon on top, but Hagler is definitely in the top 10. Monzon was a better fighter, he fought better fighters than Hagler has. I might rate Hagler higher had he met and defeated Sugar Ray Leonard, but Marvin never had the opportunity to do that."

Haha wow, funny how things work out.

Cue someone coming in and explaining how Leonard ducked Hagler until he was a living corpse and then robbing him of a decision.

I dont think moving up from a lower weight or going on to a heavier weight should improve what was achieved at Middleweight.

This just shows how underrated boxers are in their own time

he was great, although had he not had the Hearns fight his legacy would have been less secure. The way he fought a fight plan he was not accustomed to which he knew he had to and came out with the win defines his legacy.

If he was that good he'd have stopped Ray Leonard or at least Duran and would not have taken that much punishment from Mugabi and would have gotten rid of him quicker.
True his MW era was weak , but Monzon's wasn't much stronger .
I think Hagler is a top 10 all time MW , currently :
    1. Walker Smith Jr.
    2. Sam Langford
    3. Carlos Monzon
    4. Marvin Hagler
    5. Charles Burley
    6. James Toney
    7. Mike McCallum
    8. Chris Eubank
    9. Rodrigo Valdez
    10. Dick Tiger

    11. Reggie Johnson
    12. Sanderline Williams

Sanderline Williams? You have to be joking with this list, and McCallum as a great middleweight? Funny list I give you that.

Very few of Williams' losses were really losses .
Kalambay got the nod for losses of that magnitude :yep .
Did you check how many losses did Lamotta have ? or even Walker Smith Jr. ? or Burley or Gavillan ?
I might have been a bit too quick in posting that list , probably Williams should be somewhat lower than #12 , but think before you consider a "loss" as a loss and a "win" as a win. McCallum was about as convincing a MW as Burley was and more convincing than Micky Walker was.

In answer to the original question...bloody marvelous! For me, Hagler dines at the top table of great middles with (in no particular order) SRR, Monzon, Greb etc.

He would've been outstanding in era and been at least 50/50 with any middle ever, imo. He was proper old school and would have fitted in in any era.

I can't actually believe the question has been asked.

Seeing as how many have indeed marveled at his pugilistic prowess, the answer to the titular question is pretty obvious.

Even without the ring moniker, it's pretty clear that merely "very good" doesn't cut it when describing Hagler.

He was Great with a capital G.
