Thats always been my take on it. Hagler lost too many early rounds too cheaply. I've watched the fight many times but only scored it twice, 115-114 and 115-113 to Leonard although I accept it was a close fight that could have gone to Hagler.
Well Hagler, you freakin fought like an old lady the first 4 rounds..Leonard wasn't running, he was fighting smart..unlike you dumbass
I had Hagler clearly beating Watts on points. However to the best of my knowledge the loss to Monroe was never filmed, and it was a clear win for the Worm.
Hagler has only himself to blame. He claimed he was never hurt by Leonard's punches, then why didn't he walk through them and knock him out? There are several moments in the fight when Hagler has Leonard right where he wants him, on the ropes, Leonard flurries and actually backs up Hagler. Hagler probably wasn't hurt, but certainly confused. Leonard landed more, enforced his gameplan better, had better defense. Hagler landed the harder punches, but without causing serious enough damage to outweigh Leonard's advantages. Oh, and I wanted Hagler to win as a matter of justice for the **** Leonard pulled at his retirement party.
I love Hagler but Leonard did outscore him. He didnt win the fight but he did win the boxing match ............. just !
I think you misunderstand me. I give that fight to Leonard everytime. It's close, but definitely Leonard's win.
This theory that Leonard tried to "steal" the fight by rallying for the last 30 secs of the rounds may be true, but the 1st time I watched the fight I truly believed Leonard won....he fooled me easily. Watching it now I have it 6-5-1 for Leonard and am not as convinced that he won...but the judges don't get the benefit of hindsight, and I still think he won anyway!! The problem for Hagler is that he almost wanted to win this fight TOO much. His disdain for Leonard made him lose his senses and as a Hagler fan, I have to say he fought a terrible fight. If he'd have kept his composure more and been more intelligent with his pressure, this probably would've been an easy win for him given SRL's long lay-off. As has been pointed out, the corners seemed to know who was winning the fight, and I honestly think Hagler knew at the end of the fight, but like so many of us he's re-watched it and seen SRL stealing the rounds as a reason to claim he won. This fight really gave rise to the term "you have to beat the champion". A true fallacy if ever there was one.
I believe it when Haglar said if it was him that won and leonard said he didn`t win it, he would fight Leonard again. I think he would`ve fought Leonard again but after his disappointment of the decision he retired.
