I was reading an old KO mag earlier (1988) & there was talk about Leonard-Hagler 2. Does anyone know how serious the specualtion was, & how far negotiations, if any, got in proposal of a rematch? I for one would have liked to have seen a rematch, but not so long after the first encounter. It would have been interesting to see how Hagler would have approached the bout, how he would have started the fight?
It never really got of the ground. Leonard wanted Hagler to admit he lost before he'd even think about giving Marvin a rematch, Hagler wouldn't do it and went off to make films in Italy. Leonard retired again and the whole thing got dropped.
I don't remember Leonard wanting Hagler to admit defeat, but if he did it was a typical Leonard move (btw I do think Ray was a great fighter). I just remember him saying it's a one time thing no rematch, but it's been 20+ years. I do think Hagler could have won a rematch, but certainly at that point in his career no sure thing. Hagler was obviously disgusted at the decision (rightly or wrongly is irrelevent) , and was tired both physically and with the boxing game. Could you have imagined the negotiations for a second fight, Lenoard would have wanted even more concessions. I have watched the fight many times, and always come 1 or 2 pts short for Marvin.
It's never too late! We've recently seen Jeff Fenech, now 44, fight Azumah Nelson, 49! Sugar Ray is 52 and Marvelous Marvin 54. Let's get it on!!
I have the same score myself. The 1st 6 rds did it for Marv`s chances, I only gave him rd 5. :thumbsup
Hagler would have ate Ray alive. He would have been more aware of the circumstances and would have up the pressure more. I still believe he carried Leonard to be honest, that or he was truely shot. A younger Hagler would have ended Leonard because he would have been more agressive. Hagler and my Uncle were speaking about this at my uncle's hotel in Pittsburgh around the early 90's and stated that Ray was too affraid to give him a rematch and he even walked up to Marvin and told him that he won shortly after their fight. That should tell you something. Leonard was landing pit pats while Marvin was bringing it.
Serious enough for it to be featured on the front cover of The Ring with Hagler on the front. I'll get you the info on it soon as I have the magazine.
He just wasn't as relenentless and willing to take chances as he was previously and Leonard didn't have the kind of power( especially at middlweight) to keep Hagler off of him. There was definitiely something wrong. He also told my uncle that there were a time that he and Ray hung out on a regular basis and were good friends( which ended after the fight when Ray wouldn't give him a rematch and in Hagler's own words, ''fought like a coward''). That might have had something to do with it.
The Ring, September 1990. As of this writing, rumours of a rematch, sheduled for November, are circluating freely. Some of the headlines: "Leonard-Hagler II (the national) and "HBO forsees Leonard-Hagler fight" (USA Today). And it hasn't just been in the newspapers. In late March, Boston's WHDH-TV reported that Hagler was seeking a rematch. Sometimes tougher to corner in an interview than in the ring, Leonard wasn't elusive when asked about whether he was openly granting Hagler a rematch oppurtunity. " I would defintely welcome that" he said. "My clock is ticking just as fast as his clock".
