In my mind a challenger should have to do more to win a round than a champion, a even round i give to a champion. I think Hagler did the cleaner more efective, consistent fighting throughout the fight than Leonard but i dont agree taht leonard just flurried at the end of rounds he flurried throughout rounds. 1 thing i note is that lenard slapped to the body making a noise taht sounded impressive but wasnt taht impressive damagewise
I disagree, once the bell for the first round sounds then both men should be treated the same. The Champion gets to keep his title in the event of a draw, thats advantage enough.
The last couple of times I watched the fight I scored a draw quite confidently. Ray clearly made the better start though I'm not sure he took all four of the early rounds and Marvin came on strong through the mid to late rounds where Leonard had his moments too. Too bad Ray didn't fight Hagler when Marvin had better footwork and was fresher. The Hagler that fought Minter would have beaten Leonard comfortably in my book.
I honestly could see how the fight could have been scored for either, but Marvin fought the first few rounds orthodox and gave them away which was very, very dumb IMO.
i'm not sure he took all 4 rounds either. the 1st round he scored 1 good punch but was backing all the way. the 4th was quite close. i think people's perceptions are really muddied by clancy's commentating. "he's boxing orthodox. i don't like that at all tim." and how about "he's boxing orthodox and ray's piling up the rounds." he said this at the 1 minute mark of the 2nd! "PILING up the rounds" after 1.3 rounds? wtf?
watch the fight with sound off a couple of times. Ray still wins 1 or 2 points. Had he fought MH in say 81-83 no catchweight bs. Hagler Wins But history is what it is.
I have not scored the fight, But gave it to Marvin by a close margin, it clould of gone either way IMO, it would depend on how you would score it. I agree that the very close rounds should go to the champ.
I just watched it again on YouTube while trying to avoid doing more important, but less interesting, chores: 1 Leonard 2 Leonard 3 Leonard * 4 Leonard 5 Hagler 6 Leonard* 7 Hagler 8 Hagler 9 Hagler 10 Hagler 11 Leonard 12 Hagler 114- 114 a draw. Rounds 3 and 6, which I scored for Leonard were drawn rounds, but I hate to give drawn rounds, so I gave them to Leonard simply because I did so when I first watched the fight, all those years ago. All the rest are clear enough for the winner. Hagler's best work was in rounds 7 and 8. Leonard's best was in round 2 and 4. I actually think that Hagler blew a clear win, not by boxing the way he did in the first 3 rounds (OK it didn't help, but SRl was always going to be at his quickest and fleetest of foot in those rounds) but in round 6. Hagler had Leonard in bad bad shape in round 5 and needed to step it up in round 6. He didn't, but it was possible he just couldn't step up the pace like that at that stage of his career.
Well, you'd have no business being a fight judge then, once the bell goes the title is on the line and almost 'vacant'. No the 'challenger must take it away' nonsense.
No. The title would have change hands about 30% less than it does now. Boxing decisions would stink even more.
