Sugar Ray all day long. I don't have my score card but I had Ray a two or three point winner. Marvelous is awesome but he wasn't that night. He was terribly slow and a huge amount of his punches lacked snap. Ray landed the cleaner blows throughout.
I was a teenager when they fought and the first time i saw it I had Leonard winning it 116-112, even though i had been a fan since i was a little kid, i was still mesmerized by SRL tactics. Ok after so much controversy I sat down a week later with my dad, with the sound off and we bote scored it 114-114. I should watch it again with 22 more years of knowledge, i wonder if my opinion would change now.
115-113 for the winner and new champion Sugar Ray Leonard. I think that everyone expeted Hagler to win so easily that the result is still a shock to many who are still in denial about it.
I had Leonard by a point or 2. It was a real close fight.. I love Hagler and always felt he should have won it, but he just didn't do enough IMO
Exactly dude! The fight is another nostalgia trip because Hagler was a God at 160 and he was so respected and loved amongst fight fans. Ray won on the night!
The whole "you have to take the belt away from the champ" is such a crock of ****. No, you dont have to take it, you just have to win more points and rounds. That phrase is outdated from the 20s and earlier when scoring was much different.
A lot of the rounds were close pick um rounds and it is really hard to strongly disagree with someone on who they thought won. IMHO Hagler won the fight it is hard to award the fight to Leonard when he was backing up the entire fight. Watch the fight and look at the percentage of time Leonard is retreating. Being a Hagler fan I was very dissapointed with the outcome of this fight. Theon
Totally spot on! Hagler sounded foolish with that ****! "If it's a split decision it should go to the champion?" What the ****?
Okay dude! But you watch how Leonard picks punches while retreating. Also look for how often Hagler misses even when Leonard is against the ropes or in the corners. Ineffective aggresion SHOULD NOT be rewarded and that's what Marvelous offered on the night!
116-112 for Leonard. I watched this for the first time a month or so ago and scored each round. I had hagler winning 3 rounds in a row somewhere around the second half of the fight but then leonard started winning again. There were tons of rounds where half way through I had Hagler winning but then SRL turned it up and stole the round in the second half. I could see giving Hagler another round but I cant see him winning the fight because he wasnt effective enough.
Thats what I thought too, he was the aggressor but he was missing a lot, many rounds he was winning but then SRL would put in some combos and land really well and steal the round.
I gave the fight to Hagler 115-113 Many people say he lost the early rounds due to him being in orthodox stance which he changed just for Leonard, That's not true he did this against Mugabi aswell. I felt he edged his way back into fight in middle rounds and just nicked it. Such a hard call though.
