What heart shown by Fulgencio Obelmejias. Hagler threw just about everything at him but didn't knock him out or make him quit. The referee had to stop the fight. It was pretty one-sided but exciting and sadistic to watch.

And it set up the tramatic ending to the second fight.

thanks for bringing this fight up tech. This fight is a classic becuz it demonstrates classic get in your chest, never give them rest kind of infighting. Otherwise, Obel with his great height and reach would have just dictated throughout.

IMO, Obel was a much improved fighter in the rematch but...so was Marvin

Because of Hagler's dominance during his reign, some critics have derided his era as a weak one in the MW division's history. But Obelmejias was certainly no patsy. He twice had the number of Chong-Pal Park, a very credible SMW titlist who Fully dethroned (by decision in Park's South Korea) to briefly become a champion himself late in his career after Marv retired.

In their rematch, Obel got up from one of the most monstrous single punches Hagler ever delivered in getting stopped. That Hagler beat him twice the way he did shows his greatness more than any deficiency on his challenger's part.
