I don't remember that. he would not back up and Hagler's punches were wide and not really sharp for many rounds..
True, Mugabi had fought some fights at 160 lbs. - but you meant Curtis Parker. And he fought Johnson, Hargrove and Green at 154 lbs.
It's kind of funny people saying Hagler was way past his best in the Mugabi fight, but never say that about the Hearns fight - even though it was his very next fight. Yes, he was off for 11 months in between but I don't think he was a vastly different fighter - it's just that Mugabi was much more resilent than Hearns and lasted much longer. Also, Hagler didn't have to go all out against Mugabi in the first couple of rounds, because Mugabi was somewhat wary of Hagler (for good reason) and didn't do his usual kamikaze attack. Hagler was able to take his time and break him down. Mugabi fought well, though and landed some nice bombs - which of course the iron chinned Hagler easily shook off. He respects Mugabi, as well he should. Mugabi gave him a very good fight.
I think Hagler felt the bombs that Mugabi landed. How could he not? Apparently he was pissing blood for days after that one. But Hagler had a great poker face and pushed through the pain. He just wanted it more that night and Mugabi couldn't deal with a guy that was prepared to die to win.
You are correct I meant Parker all 4 fought regularly at 160 as well there is only a 6 lb difference between the max of both weights Hagler routinely fought a few lbs below 160.....I always felt the amateur program had better weights seperations 106-112-119-125-132-139-147-156-165-178-201-201+ at least when I was still boxing amateur before pro....to me 154 does nothing but give smaller middleweights and big welterweights a division of their own with very little size difference.....there is better weight class dispersion with amateurs
Charlo is no joke but I would argue he only makes the weight because of next day weigh ins otherwise he is in reality super middle without dehydration
GGG is a modern Hagler in style with maybe more power but stylistically similar both could switch stances while throwing with the step switch, iron chins and in shape....I wish GGG had a Hearns to challenge him Canelo is great but not a Hearns maybe Charlo or Hurd could be the great Challenger he needs to fight through some serious adversity as of now he looks to be on the slide...we will see....how many fights can you have at championship level without a serious threat to bring out the best before you get flat?
You think Charlo takes either the Mugabi or Hearns that fought Hagler? (let's say 160lbs, day before weigh-ins)
I wouldn't say that yet he still needs a harder fight before I personally would pick him over Hearns of that fight but I think his size, skill and power makes him a favorite over Mugabi with Hearns possibly even at this point. Charlo is special let's see how his career goes if his chin matches his talent I would favor him over Hearns
What is all the talk of Hagler being a jr middle ? The guy fought at 159 or 160 for almost his whole career. They say he over trained for Leonard and Amelia in at 158 or so but that is the exception. He was a natural, perfect middleweight.
Well there is traditional middleweights we all know and love like GGG and Hagler.....then there is the modern era where middleweights are closer to ltheavyweights
You're not wrong .. I guess the game old about the weigh in times and so on .. as a real young guy Hagler tended to fluctuate , sometime 157 and change but for the most part from his mid 20's forward he was 159 or 160 ..
