I’m at most willing to credit Marvin with half a successful defense against Fully Obel the first time and half for the rematch (we’ll be generous and call that one successful defense). And none for Caveman Lee. So subtract two from the total. Those were farces.

Personally, Hagler beat better competition than
Monzon in my opinion, and looks better on film.
He was much more consistent than Ray Robinson
At Middleweight, (Though of the 3 fighters you've
chosen to mention , Robinson on his best night I
believe beat Hagler. Styles make fights.)
And Greb their isn't enough film on him to
make a real educated guess how good or
bad he was.
But I do know this, the little film that we
do have on him I've seen, is exactly the
style and physicality Hagler shined against.

 

I also think he won all three fights but we're in the minority.

 

I would rank Hagler in the low end of the Top 20 right now. Had he gotten those wins, he would rank in the Top15. So no big difference

 

Hagler is a cry baby, every time a fight does not go his way he wails Woe is me. Who cares that Carlos Monzon does not look good on film, he was a consistent winner, 82 bout unbeaten streak dating back to Oct 9 1964, reign of champion Nov 7 1970 until his retirement on August 29 1977, retired as champion, Hagler got beat and lost his title. His opposition, Carlos fought everyone that was put in front of him. He did not act like a juvenile delinquent like Hagler, trying to intimidate future opponents from ringside. Promoters promote, fighters do not need to promote. 14 successful title defenses says it all for King Carlos Monzon. So did that stylish style of Hagler allow him to beat a fighter like Sugar Ray Leonard? If Hagler was better than Greb, Monzon and Robinson, why didn't he knock out a fighter that had been away for 3 and a half years? So please get over the loss to Sugar Ray Leonard, you and I are not qualified to judge a bout officially. If you cannot get over Hagler's defeat see a licensed Therapist.

Better competition, than Monzon''s . Meaning his competition was better than Monzon's COM-PET-TIT-ION , not better than Monzon.

 

Why are you ranting at me? We agree Hagler's whining over his loss to Leonard was sad and a little pathetic on his part , when he could've easily handled it in the ring.
Where we don't agree is Monzon was a better fighter than Hagler. Just two different opnions.
But you go out on these wild raving rants to anyone that disagree with you on Monzon.... As it's a personal insult to the man.
If anyone that needs a therapist it's you.... Your man love over a brutal woman abuser and killer as if he walked on water is also pathetic. You talk about how tough and " Macho" he was, bringing up his title defenses in every post you make on the subject of Monzon as if any real boxing fan doesn't already know that information is a testimony too your own blind man crush.
Monzon was a heck of a fighter , but was a pathetic human being in life, and how you go off the rails on any little disagreement about the man , or this particular subject, so are you.

 

Carlos Monzon was a winner Flash24. And you too talk about Hagler like you have a man crush. Monzon did retire as champion and Sorry for ranting at you. I will no longer enter your posts, I will leave this thread after adding my two cents.

 

I don't agree I think Monzon had better opposition overall, and Monzon destroyed ATG Welterweight Napoles who moved up to Middleweight, where as Hagler lost to ATG Welterweight Leonard at Middleweight.

To be fair Napoles was small even as a welter, particularly comparative to SRL who had numerous good wins above 147 including Hagler. Napoles was a case of a guy genuinely not suited to the move up mostly due to size. Also Monzon was miles closer to his best, or really good form than Hagler was. Heck, Monzon looked superb even in his last fight. With Hagler one could see the decline post Hearns and it was rapid.

Not taking anything away from Monzon beating Napoles (P4P he was rated at or near the top) but it was a tough gig for Napoles, size wise. He fought for years at 135 and even below. Even when he challenged Monzon he didn't reach the current JM limit of 154.
