Hagler v. 1982 light-heavyweights

I have only see one fight of Scott, the one against Braxton (Qawi) at Rahway, but I wouldn't favor Hagler over any of the others and probably not Scott either, given that he was a world class LHW in a terrific division. Hagler was best suited for MW. Going up to face high quality fighters 15 lbs. heavier is an extremely tall task, even for someone as great as Hagler.

I don't even know if I would rank Hagler as a middleweight higher than Spinks as a light-heavy to begin with. Two of the best fighters in those divisions to ever lace them up.

 

He is too small . he loses to all them

 

I believe Marvin is too small to handle anyone in that group, but I don't think any of them knock him out.

 

Qawi and spinks would ko him

 

He could have beaten the shot Saad of Aug. 1982 who fought the second Braxton fight. I don't think he could have beaten any of the others.

 

All beat Hagler.

 

Depends on who they're fighting and at what stages in their careers that they fight them. The only middleweights moving up I would give a chance against Spinks, Qawi, Saad, Scott and Mustafa Muhammed are guys like Harry Greb and possibly Bob Fitzsimmons. It also depends on the body type of the fellow moving up. A fighter like Tommy Hearns could move up more easily due to his body dynamics. Having written that, I believe Spinks, Qawi, Scott and Saad all decapitate Tommy and Mustafa Muhammed outboxes him convincingly.

Yeah Matt was pretty much shot at that point, but usually these h2h match ups take the prime of the fighter into consideration. In my opinion, prime Matt doesn't lose to any version of Marvin.

 

Marvin would have been a really small Lt. Heavyweight, so I could see him having trouble.

If we are talking literally 1982 then I do believe he beats Scott and Saad Muhammad. Saad was losing the rematch in a one-sided fashion to Qawi and months away from being stopped by Eric Winbush.

Mustafa Muhammad would have been tricky. The guy had a tendency to nap during some of his fights, but he carried a good skill set and a great punch that would have at least got Marvin's attention.

The one match up that looks really bad is Qawi. In 1982 he was a literal buzz saw.

 

He would get knocked out, left right and centre. His frame would have been laughably small.

 

Bob Arum said the reason he matched Hagler & Duran, was because he saw them standing side by side at a Boxing Hall of Fame event, and realized they were both about the same size.

 

Arum matched them because Duran's win over Moore made it a BIG money fight imho. Take the money while it's there.

Duran could be inconsistent and at the higher weights was somewhat vulnerable. From memory a mandatory against McCallum was pushed back for him to fight Hagler. He then went to Hearns instead of McCallum. Big money for both matches.

A match against McCallum could have cost Duran a LOT of money. He would have got ****** all for fighting him and would have been a fair chance of coming off second best, which would have made big money matches against Hagler and Hearns a far different proposition. If he was soundly beaten there would not have been much demand for them at all.

As soon as he beat Barkley and had his stocks up again it was straight to the money again, in this case SRL.

Very astute, you get the big bucks and also a chance at beating a bonafide name rather than risking everything against lesser lights.
