Hi I believe that was was a little before my time. I trained at Freddie's Gym from 1976 -1980. Great memories , Great characters. It's a small world. Kind Regards.
I was talking about Freddie the other day. I become friends on FB with a lad called Dar Cole. His old fella Eamon boxed out of that gym.
Hi, just saw your message, the name doesn't ring a bell, again maybe just before my time. I started training at freddies when I was 16 up until I was 20 and loved every moment. Kevin, Tony Sibson,Domonic Bergonzie , Jackie Turner, Johnny Kennedy,Gary Ball,John Cooper, Eric Perkis,Keith Bristol, Sammy Reeson, Lenny Mclean . Brian Hall, Tony Lavell, and Billy Wells were assistant trainers. Great days indeed. Kind regards.
Freddie was a cracking fella, I met him a few times over the years. My dad thought the world of him. I've got some great stories about Freddie that I'm saving for a biography we're doing on my fathers life.
Yes Freedie was a real character , I remember one of Freddies famouse lines, Kevin was having one of his many wars and at the end of the round. fred was shouting at him while working on the cuts and Kevin said for f---- sake Fred give me a swig of water, Freddie said B------s you haven't earned it yet. Freddie Hill a legend. I will never forget him, I also thought the world of him, and so did everybody else at the gym. Looking forward to reading your dads biography. Regards
Haha, here's one that Eamon Cole told his lad Dar Ye seemed like a real character,me dad says when he went pro in 68 with Chris they went in the gym in lavender hill and ask Freddie were was massage table and he said there's none as a good fighter doesn't need one and a bad fighter doesn't deserve one haha class
PPS I often think about what Freddie would make of the boxing world today. the boxers have there own chefs, cardio trainers etc , they turn up for the fights in chauffeur driven limos. When Kevin had his 3rd fight with minter my car was out of action and I was supposed to collect Kevin And Fred from Freddie's flat in camberwell and take them to wembley, I had only my works van available so I called Fred and told him the bad news, Fred said don't worry we can use that. Kevin got in the back Fred in the front and we set off for wembley . When we arrived the parking attendant said you can't park here it's for artists and personel only. Fred said yes that's us we got the top of the bill in the back. The attendant looked in the back and couldn't believe his eyes when Kevin said How's it going. priceless.
Alan Rudkin, Christ a great fighter, you must be very proud. I think he new my grandfather.Toby Noble He had a gym in leroy sreet bermondsey in the 1960s called Toby's Gym Club.
When I first got into boxing my grandfather gave me a framed sighed photc of your father that was taken by Derek Row, i was only a young kid then , I went home and put it on the wall in my room amongst the other boxing memorabilia . strange how things come back in your memory after so many years.
Nice one :good, small world isn't it! I know the name Noble are you related to Tommy Noble as well? I used to have a drink in Bermondsey back in the late 80's at Billy Aird's boozer, The Lilliput.
