I don't regularly read the classic forum like I used to (speaking of which, the site makeover looks very nice), so I apologize if this question has already been discussed to death. If that's the case, then you can just direct me to an appropriate thread and close this one.

But for some strange reason, I never asked myself this question, so I never really thought about it, but I think it's an interesting question.

I score it 10-9 for Hearns. I don't know the exact rules concerning 10-10 rounds, but it seems to me that Hearns won the round via effective boxing, sustained and clean attacking, and damage (bloodying Hagler's face). Of course, Hearns paid for this in the end. Still very likely the greatest round of all-time though, imo.

    10-9 Hagler clear enough.

Hearns may have landed the best punch that round but Hagler landed more solid punches.
I also think Hagler dictated Hearns. Chased him all over the ring, imposed himself.

People often say "Hearns didn't box, he made a mistake of trying to slug with Hagler", but it looks like Hearns was trying to box and Hagler wouldn't let him. He was on him from the opening seconds, cutting off the ring, landing body punches.

The only time Hearns turned to slugging was when he rocked Hagler, but he didn't sustain that for long, sensibly attemting to renew the boxing gameplan when he saw Hagler wasn't hurt. But Hagler never let him do that boxing game plan.

Very good points. You've certainly made me rethink how the round went for both of them.

Tommy was at a severe disadvantage in the first rough after he broke his hand, and the leg situation was also in question.Just watched Hearns Benitez, and the hitman was a much better boxer than the one Hagler met.Hagler was a beast that night,a beast Leonard or Duran didn't face. Such a shame the two never met again.

This for me, too. Few fighters can have landed so many good shots, had so much success as Hearns and yet still clearly lost the round.

It was a close round, but it esbablished clearly, right away, that Hearns would lose the fight.

The scoring of the round was academic - it was clear Hearns wasn't lasting the distance.

Hagler's immense strength and pressure made it look like Hearns had no legs, and his concrete chin allowed him to easily absorb Hearn's best right hand.

Broken Hand or not, Hearns wasn't going to hurt Hagler.

Sutherland, Singletary, Colbert - all lasted the distance with a 160 lb. Hearns.

These guys weren't blown up former lightweight and welterweight champs, like Duran.

    Excuses

Hagler established right away he was too strong for Hearns.

They fight 10 times at 160 and Hagler wins by KO every time

Funny,I bet Hagler would never face Hearns in the higher weights, his middleweight frame would have a tougher time.

10-10 even. They both got hurt by the other during that round and each had their moments. In the first half Hagler initiated the attack but Hearns won the exchange and towards the middle and the end Hagler backed Hearns up to the ropes and was working him there but wasn't landing everything. Hearns was missing more than he was landing at this point and Hagler had him hurt towards the last 10 seconds.

That's like taking away from Willie Pep because he didn't go up to welterweight to fight Ray Robinson.

Completely agree. Hagler turned from his usual methodical boxer-puncher style to a raging bull and made it difficult for Hearns to box him like he did Benitez.

Hearns tried to get some distance midway through the round, but Hagler closed the distance. Hagler kept doing this in the 2nd and 3rd when Hearns would try to box and use more movement.

Not only did Hagler's style make it difficult for Hearns to box, but in closing the distance, took away Hearns's most dangerous weapon. Hearns was most dangerous when he got distance so he could throw that right hand with leverage and power, as he had done against Cuevas & Duran, and later Shuler.

Hagler didn't let Hearns get the distance he preferred.

    10-9 Hagler's round.

Hearns was totally thrown by Hagler's pressure and forcing of the pace. In reaction, Hearns had some early success (first 30 seconds) and a scattering of small gains throughout the round, as he continuously tried to gather a position. However, Hagler was consistently landing on Hearns; left and right; head and body. And, despite taking a few himself and picking up the cut, Hagler was also better defensively, in my opinion.

10-9 for Hagler, but it was close. No issues with a 10-10 round here.
