Kovalev hits too hard, is much bigger.....................Roberto Duran, a very small fighter, went 15 rounds with Hagler and lost by split decision, gave Hagler a hard fight.................Kovalev would kill him..............
Hagler fought in a era that had same day weigh-ins . Under those rule Kovalev would not make it to the ring cutting to 168! Under todays rule Hagler fights at 154.
Kovalev weighted 188lbs against BHop I think so losing 20lbs of muscle would probably have him dead at the weight. It's far harder to drain down below your natural weight than move up. So a weight drained Kovalev probably gets stopped.
i say hagler now because his accomplishments and resume against GGG's. also i think prime hagler would be one of the few specimens to handle GGG's power
Kovalev has yet to go a long way to prove he belongs in the same league with Hagler. He's a top boxer no doubt, but I think the reason he's appreciated so much is thanks to his clean record - something highly rated in this forum *cough* calzaghe *cough* - although 90% of those wins are against cab drivers, and his stereotypical badass eastern-boxer looks and accent. The number of top boxers Kovalev fought is only a few. If you don't count a grandpa Hopkins, the best guy he beat is Nathan Cleverly who recently got destroyed by a complete bum called Tony Bellew. Kovalev is good, there's no denying that, but he needs at least 3 more wins against the likes of Pascal, Stevenson, Ward, Beterbiev to have his name next to an all time great like Hagler.
Shouldn't this be Hagler vs. Golovkin? That would be much more competitive. Kovalev is huge, has solid skills, and hits like an enraged horny buffalo
Well then if Kovalev is not affected by the cut then I've gotta go with him. He impressed me against Hopkins. If he does not knock Hagler out he keeps him very honest and out of the fight. Maybe things wouldn't be so cut and dry if Hagler had showed us what he could do at 175...
i did not read first, you're asking who would win between a 100% healthy hagler and a dead kov ? same day weigh ins would kill kov even worse. same day weigh ins i think kov might be fighting at HW since its way back in the day, or at least CW. say for some reason, as matches should be, both fighters close to 100% Kov destroys hagler, hagler way too small for kov
Trip G vs Hagler would get many peoples pants wet, not mine though. i wouldnt get a high off hagler getting destroyed by Trip G. how many shots could hagler take before crumbling ? probably anywhere from round 6 onwards would be his time to become a Trip G victim
HAGLER in his prime fought duran who was not prime and giving up 15 pounds and still was afraid to trade with and fought a hard close fight wit him speaks volumes on how great duran is
Not really viable for Kov to get down to the weight. Hagler's fighting weight was around 163 and Kov's is around 187. Marvin never showed the slightest inclination to move up to face Spinks at a significantly lower fighting weight than that of Kovalev. So, if they faced off at their usual ring weights, given that Kov has considerable boxing skills as well as power, I think he prevails without much trouble. The only question would be if Marvin makes it to the final bell.
