I stopped paying attention after this ridiculous statement. NO ONE, with the exception of you and possibly Redrooster thought Hagler was slipping in to oblivion. Sure, Hagler was slipping a little, but Hearns and Mugabi were also better opponents than the likes of Caveman Lee, Scypion, Obel, and even Sibson..........................Was it a ***** move for Leonard to invite Hagler down for his decision and then decide to retire? Absolutely. But Leonard had a detached retina, which to this day is still career threatening and was deemed career ending at the time. Nobody was clamoring for Leonard/Hagler. It was a golden age. Arguello-Pryor, Hagler/Hearns, Hearns/Duran, Hagler/Mugabi, and then Tyson came along. The only reason Leonard-Hagler received interest was because of Leonard's popularity and the fact that it was deemed near impossible for him to beat Hagler. On a side note. Check out Owen Wilson in the movie Bottle Rocket. There's a scene where he prefaces every sentence with "FACT". Funny ****, but I'm not sure you want to emulate him.
You obviously cant read. You simply cant digest Leonard SD 12 hagler. Hagler was shot? Well nobody was saying that before the fight or even after, except you and rooster. Even hagler doesnt say,oh i was past my best, thats why leonard won. If you can read between the lines it is not suggested he hyped up the fight for six years,it is suggested that leonard is hyping up a potential match up which is interrupted by two genuine retirements. If hagler is so good and leonard such a conman (and a welter to boot.) why couldnt even a past his best hagler deal with him? I recall also lenny offered hagler a match at 154 as a compromise but hagler declined. Is Hagler chicken to sacrifice 6 pounds? I dont know if ive mentioned that leonards natural weight was 147? And whilst leonard was waiting for hagler to 'get shot' was leonard getting younger and getting the benefit of top class world class bouts to keep sharp? Leonard SD 12. Period. All those who follow your train of thought are just deluded.
Ok,but the detached retina thing didn't prevent him from fighting Kevin Howard BEFORE Hagler,or Hagler himself,or Donny LaLonde or Terry Norris or...well you catch my drift. So much for that theory.Well at least you got the "***** move" comment right concerning Leonard's decision to invite Hagler to that self serving will he or won't he retirement party-to which Leonard charged the general public admission. As far as "slipping a little" at that point-first off, look at the Roldan fight.Slowpoke Roldan was landing bombs that Marvin would have avoided without much trouble just a few years before. If you can't see that, then it's obvious that you didn't follow Hagler's career.Secondly, against Hearns,Hagler didn't box him,as he just pummeled Tommy by making it a streetfight and relying on his granite chin and fine punching power, instead of utilizing(gone at that point) movement and footwork. And again,if you can't see how old, slow and shopworn Marvin looked against Mugabi, then you need to watch the fight again, that's if you have ever at all.If Marvin didn't have such a great chin,he might have been knocked out as he was hit that often by Mugabi's powershots. As far as a Hagler-Leonard fight not garnering much interest, you're right about that era being a golden age,but that's about it.When Leonard first started discussing the possibility of an encounter, the public were licking their lips at the possibility of such a bout.By the time 87 rolled around everyone(even his fans that got fleeced at the retirement party)was used to Leonard's bull****.And yet it was one of the most anticipated fights of all time when it was about to transpire. On a side note,I've never seen the movie,"Bottle Rocket",nor am I a big fan(nor hater) of Owen Wilson. And I certainly don't "emulate" him.But if your making that comparison makes you happy,go right ahead.
I can read just fine. You just can't get over that fact that your Lenny ducked Hagler until Marvin was shot. And you're expecting the world middleweight champion for how many years to MOVE DOWN when CHALLENGED BY A SMALLER FIGHTER?Just another attempt of scumbag Lenny to duck the fight. And you call me deluded? You just reinforced everything I've been saying. And did Leonard want it for Marvin's middleweight title too, like when he had LaLonde move down to 168 for LaLonde's lightheavy and newly formed supermiddle title? This is getting easier and easier. And by the way,Leonard was at least 2 years younger, had FAR,FAR fewer fights than Hagler and was nowhere near as shopworn. But most importantly Hagler was fighting less than once a year himself. So much for the "benefit of top class bouts to keep sharp" theory.
Man,you have to really practice to be this dim. Lets leave it at the facts to avoid running round in circles. Leonard beat hagler who nobody said what shot except you and rooster. A million good analysts have never said that hagler was shot. Goodbye. I suppose mnan needs his illusions to keep his hero 'super'. (and im not a lenny fan,Dooooooran is my boy.)
Illusions,I love that.I am the dim one? You're the one that inferred that Hagler was chicken to fight Leonard when Leonard wanted the undisputed middleweight champ(who had NEVER fought at 154)to accomodate Lenny and move down to 154.And in doing so,you don't even realize you made MY argument.Yeah, nobody else in the world except Rooster and I said Hagler was shot, whereas a million different analysts have never said Hagler was shot.Right.You actually belong on the General. You just can't accept the fact that Lenny ducked Hagler for a very long time-until Hagler was shot. And yes,Hagler is one of my favorites, but,as much as I hate to be in agreement with such a dimwit,Duran is my all-time favorite, too.
You know rather than steal my literary phrases, why dont you come up with some of your own? Like marvin, you cant handle the speed and guile!!!!! And you is definatley shot!!!! Retirement and italian movies beckon cintron...
YOUR "LITERARY PHRASES"???!!!LIKE YOU INVENTED THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE??!!SPEED AND GUILE??!!!Suffering from a dose of self-importance are you?The General beckons for people like you.Shot??I'm leaving now but will be back later to LAUGH at you some more. And by the way, dimwit.Learn to spell DEFINITELY.
Speed and guile. Guts and wile. savvy and style. leonard p4p by a mile. And a typo and haglers loss raises Your BILE!!! Youve got to smile! Im sure you will respond with more tosh in a while...
Leonard fought Howard as a tuneup 2 years after the detached retina. Hagler and his wife were in the audience. Surely, Hagler was the ultimate goal. Howard knocked him down and Leonard reconsidered fighting Hagler.
EXACTLY!!THANK YOU!!!Funny how he reconsidered fighting Hagler again 3 years later when it was obvious that Hagler was shot.
Yes.I'm laughing at your crap.Dylan Thomas(RIP)certainly needn't worry about his place in literary history. The General Forum is still calling for you.
And just for record, the vast majority of the posters in this thread have Hagler winning if they had fought in 82.Unofficially and up to this point, the ratio is 4:1 in favor of 82 Hagler over 82 Leonard:yep.
Leonard outpoints Hagler in their prime, the only reason the 87 fight got close was because Leonard gassed & had to stand his ground (which he did) in the 2nd half of the fight, a prime SRL could keep that movement up for 15 rds. The bottom line is that Hagler cannot outbox Leonard & he aint knocking him out, not a chance in hell IMO, Ray`s chin, heart & toughness was 100% & Marv aint a 1 punch KO guy & he wont accumulate enough damage to wear Ray down. Im not saying it wouldnt be a very tough fight for SRL but he`s a better boxer than Hagler, faster of hand & foot, can out-think him & brawl with Hagler when trapped on the ropes which wont be often, not prime v prime. I dont want to hear `well, hagler wasnt prime when they fought` because Leonard wasnt prime either & was inactive for 3 yrs & had never fought at MW before. Leonard W15 Hagler (UD)
Always make me chuckle this one. Hagler wasn't prime? Really? And Leonard was, having not fought for three years? Yawn. You tell 'em, B.
