Your probably talking any MWT version pre Turpin vs any version of Marvin pre Mugabi, likely the Lamotta 6 & Hearns versions (I favour that version of Hagler over Sibson n co but its basically the same fighter using a different style vs a different opponent)

I dont have a great deal of doubt that Robinson wins this one, I think his speed & leg movement would give Marvin all kinds of problems & enable him to outscore MMH from the outside for the majority of the fight, Robbo can also hold his own inside & has the power to earn respect from Hagler.

I think there is as much of a chance of Hagler outpointing Robinson as there is of Robinson winning easily, in other words, smart money says SRR wins a clear but mighty competitive decision, maybe 9-6 in rds.

    Thoughts :think

Really really tough one to call. Great thread. Based on resume, and their respective talent/skill I'll lean toward SRR by a close decision. I'd say it's 60-70/40-30 confident on this pick.

Ive seen a lot of Hagler`s fights & Ive yet to see a version that Id favour over the Robinson from the JLM fight.

Speed kills & the speedster`s power aint too shabby either, height & reach also go to Ray.

Robinson all the way for me.

Hagler had the longer reach, but I'll take Robinson too, close but clear. Faster, harder hitter, better movement, and better with combinations.

I think Robinson's hand-speed advantage will enable him to nick a decision over Hagler

I like Robinson's speed to make the difference. Reasonably competitive decision.

Hagler is my 2nd favorite fighter of all time, but I don't think he wins this one. Robinson is a little to fast, too versatile, and has enough pop to keep Hagler honest.

i think the selection has more to do with whose style you like more than anything else.

me? I go with the more effective style of hagler. In his younger days you saw the effective jab, the movement that frustrated the big punchers. I also think he more economical with his shots, sacrifying flash for efficiency. And he has the better defense along with a cast iron chin and the southpaw stance. in addition he was the more proven middleweight and had great footwork.

The only thing that gives me pause is his mentality. I know this sounds strange but it seems that if Hagler cant bring himself to see his opponent as a threat or cant bring himself to hate the opponent, he begins to look very flat. He needs some passion in addition to just looking to outpoint someonw like Robbi-Hagler has to want this one as badly as he did Hearns and some of the others, otherwise Robbi will take a decision over a confused and befuddled Hagler.

Can marvin at his very best beat Robinson at his? I think so

Between the two best ever MW's.....hmmm.....I'll give natural MW Hagler ever so slight an edge. I think it's possible Marvin could TKO Robbo late if he went into steamroll mode like he did with Hearns. But I've got to give the great Sugar Ray his chances at scoring a decision. He was too ****ing awesome not to be given them.

Yes indeed, both guys would need to be in peak form to have a chance at winning.

I think a prime SRR could hit Marvin effectively from the outside and then tie him up. I never really though Hagler was particularly quick, both in terms of raw hand-speed and in terms of getting off, which isn't a good disadvantage to have against SRR. SRR mid UD.

(Also, Hagler being the natural MW doesn't really make that much difference; let's not forget Sugar had decent power himself!)

Whilst i think hagler was probably slightly past prime for the hearns fight that the sort of style of fight he would need to operate to beat robinson, i much prefer the younger hagler of around the hamani bout time. More consider, good boxing skills etc but that version of hagler wouldn't beat robinson IMO, ray had better footwork and handspeed and would keep the fight at mid to long range and with his flashier combination take a UD. Hagler was underrated boxer and there not many fighters in middleweight history i would take to outbox a prime hagler but robinson is one

However if we see hagler like he was against hearns, now that will cause all sorts of problems for ray, a war suits marvin more than it does robinson, ray almost certainly not going to knock him out and whilst no slouch inside i don't consider him to be as effective as he is at mid to long range.

The key for me in the fight would come down to robinson control of range and exactly where this fight was fought, if he can keep moving, use the jab and pile up the points with combinations and not get dragged into a war i favour him strongly to take the decision, if hagler gets inside and turns it into a brawl i would favour him.

I'll go with robinson but i would not be suprised if hagler takes it
