I've been watch a bit of Hagler lately and feel without doubt he was an all time great .. I'm curious how you feel about how'd he have done against four great middleweights that followed him: Nunn, Toney, Hopkins and Jones ... all could box, had great athleticism and terrific speed .. each posed different challenges ... Thoughts ?
Hagler never really fought any slick boxers in his title reign, and boxers/movers seemed to be the most troublesome for Hagler in his early career. So it would've been interesting to see how he would cope with the likes of Nunn, Toney, Jones.
I think he wears down Nunn, outworks Toney in a close one, and loses to BHOP and Jones via decision. I realize a lot of folks on here will disagree with my picks against BHOP and Jones but BHOP was a master at fighting southpaws and had the size, strength and versatility to beat Hagler. Not saying it's 100% but I could see him winning. Jones was simply an athletic freak that we have never seen and I wouldn't beat against him. His combination of speed, skill and power would be a major problem for Hagler. All this said, I was ahuge Hagler fan and count him as one the greatest champions of the sport.
Although nothing would be easy in any of these fights, I have Hagler outpointing Toney and Hopkins. He would be outpointed by Jones. The interesting fight would be with Nunn. Nunn, like Donald Curry had a short prime but that prime was glorious. If Nunn is fighting at his very best he outpoints a highly frustrated Hagler. Anything other than his best and Hagler pus him down for the ten count.
Jones has the best chance because of his speed. the rest arent even worth mentioning Someone here, thinks way too much of Hopkins but we wont mention him
Not sure about RJJ hard to envision that fight. Toney might be one of the worst match ups you could give Hagler- Toney would most likely box his way to a win with a lot of dead even rounds. Marv couldn’t try and dog Toney out of there when it got tough- James was the ****ing man and ate shots from HW’s without wincing. it’s a boxing match and Hagler doesn’t get a say. Marvin’s alternative path is blocked by a chin of steel and a wall of old school defence. Close fight but yeah I think Toney is the favourite here- not a huge one but he is the favourite none the less in my opinion.
I also don’t like Hagler chances against someone that fights the way Hopkins does being so much bigger. I’d take a hop by a 7-5 type win. I don’t think Hagler could get off enough or impose himself the right way often enough- the size difference would be noticeable and a big part of the equation here.
He might potentially beat all four. He has routes to victory against all four. Then again, a flat version of Hagler might lose to any of the four.
I don’t know about RJJ- however I think if they all fought Hagler (excluding RJJ) once Marv would come out 2-1. I don’t think Nunn has enough for the Marvellous one but Toney and Hopkins most likely outpoint Hagler.
