Bob Foster by knockout. Dick Tiger showed even a middleweight with an iron chin can be blasted away easily by Bob Foster. Hagler never once stepped foot into the ranks of lightheavyweights, so we don't know how successful he will be there..but I suspect Foster's jab and power will overwhelm Hagler.
We never saw Hagler's knees buckled, or witnessed him staggered into significant distress during his career, and he may well have had the best chin of any middleweight champion. In recent years, Toney has proved that it's not impossible for a middleweight of Hagler's size to stand up to power punching heavyweights. Marv had a superb long right jab and fine lateral movement, qualities which could have troubled Bob, with his trailing right foot in the bucket. Also, Bob didn't typically box tall, and may have been leaning forward into Hagler's jab. The reflex reaction would always be to say Bob would easily blow him out, being simply too big for Marv, but Hagler certainly dealt with Obelmejias and Hearns, and I'm loath to penalize Marv for having the career long self discipline Toney lacked. Former middleweights Henry Hank and Pierre Fourie both hung tough twice with Bob, and a peak Hagler was far greater than either. Bob did knock out an aging Tiger in stunning fashion, but Dick had previously been floored by Griffith, and had his knees buckled twice by hooks from Joey Archer, of all people. The evidence clearly states that Tiger's chin was not in Hagler's rarefied league. Of course Bob should beat him. But this could be far more competitive and surprising than is commonly supposed. Marv was perfectly capable of playing the cutie when the situation clearly called for it.
Hagler himself has stated he had times in the ring when he was stunned so bad he didn't know what stadium he was in. I love Tommy but Foster is an altogether much different proposition. If he came out warring to negate the height and reach of Bob like he did Tommy it would be a very very early night - in reverse. Hagler would box, Foster would pressure. Foster and his emminent threats would control the fight and he'd probably settle for a clear decision tho it's far from out of the question he'd hurt Hagler and capitalise.
The only difference is that Fully Obel is not in the Foster or Hearns level of fighter, and Hearns was just as great as Foster and in my mind greater, but he was moving up in weight to fight Hagler. If Hagler moved up to fight Foster he would be at a big disadvantage, although you are right Hagler had long arms. 75 inches. Foster would be too big.
Christ! Marvin would be in the ER. Foster & Spinks both would have obliterated Hagler. Too big, too much power.
Hagler is a class above Foster, but allot would depend on how he carried the weight at 175. If he carries it well, he beats Foster
Foster in two rounds? Never. Now Tiger's jaw was rock, but he was hardly primed and peaking on the night he offered Foster his face. Hagler doesn't go from invincible to shaky over a matter of fifteen pounds, Bob Foster or not. It would take Sonny Liston to deck Hagler that quickly.
I dont know what to make of Foster's power. People say he didn't hit hard enough to bother anyone decent north of 175, yet apparently even the most iron-chinned 160 fighters of all-time are guaranteed to get destroyed by him ..... My guess would be that a lot of those light-heavyweights that Foster knocked out, Tommy Hearns would have KO'd too. Not all of them, but a lot of them. Foster was known to pick some soft touches. I do think Foster hit harder than Hearns, but seriously if he was as monstrous at 175 (in terms of absolute power) as people suggest I think he would have troubled a few decent heavyweights. Foster iced some guys, and TKO'd a lot. Some fighters went the distance with him, and none of them are indisputedly better defensively or in terms of durability than Marvin Hagler. It's not as if Hagler was hanging his chin out every fight waiting to get hit either.
Hagler was indeed a better technician than Foster was, I know that for sure. But, on the whole, here is a classic case where size does matter.. Foster lacks Hagler's skill and finess, but makes up for it in power and physical attributes........ Foster DOES KO Hagler..........:hatbbb MR.BILL:yep
