Assuming it is a first time meeting (no Middleweight fight), then I go with Hearns by decision. If it is a rematch at Lightheavy, then Hagler TKO's Tommy in 7 rounds ( the old once knocked out by "buggaboo")
I think the weight suits tommy's frame much better than hagler's. Hagler spent his whole career at middle, who knows how the added wieight would effect his boxing, where as with tommy it's more tangible. i would go with hearns on points.
Hagler was a career middleweight.I dont see this making much difference though as Tommy started out way lower and despite looking big up top his legs always looked skinny.Marvin would win in the same fashion he did at middle.
I think Hearns would have stopped Hagler in about 2 rounds. This sounds crazy I know, but I think Hagler never accepted Hearns as a rematch partly because he knew he put his all out in the first fight and knew he would be hit by the right hand in the rematch when it was not broken. I just do not think he had confidence he could be as aggresive and effective with Hearns in the rematch. That must have taken some discipline. Also, Hagler and Hearns hit each other easily. I think Hearns had only one choice. To knock out Marvin or be knocked out. And I think at this weight he has the advantage in size more and uses his frame and leverage.
Marvin only belonged at 160 I think . He was 5-9 3/4 tall and was solid at middleweight. But any higher and he is at a big disadvantage. I know Qawi was like 5-7 or so, but he was naturally a big guy.
marvin was a amatuer light heavy and tommy was a amatuer lightweigth...i feel this would prolly benifit hagler just as much as hearns would. we all know hagler is swarming forewards as his way of getting passed that long jab. the only reason hagler didnt go to 174 was becuase he was a solid but still stout 5'9 i dont see the weight effecting tommy. i felt his chin did improve as he went up in wieght but that was more due to him understanding and expereincing and becoming more rounded fighter in his later career. hagler tko by round 7 or round 6
I think the real reasons Hagler didnt go up to LHW were he wasnt able to put the weight on ( amatuers dont need to be ready to go 12-15 rounds ) and maintain his stamina. He was not a big middleweight at all, he was strong but not big. Secondly i dont believe he beats any of Spinks, Qawi, Mustapha Muhammad or Saad Muhammad so there was no point in moving up when Hearns, Duran and Leonard were bigger money fights than any of those fights would be, at a weight where Hagler was comfortable. I think at 175 Hearns outboxes a slower and less busy version of Hagler
I think so also. He did not stand and slug as much as he got older, and I do not think he was as effective so he knew he was slowing down. Funny thing about Hearns is that once he slowed down, he started to fight at normal paces, and then his stamina was fine. He went 12 rounds 5 times from Nov 1988 to March of 1992. That would have been unheard of in the early 1980s.
Hearn's seemed sturdier as he put on weight, despite his advancing age as he was doing said moving up. I mean, he fought for nearly 20 years on and off after being stopped by Barkley at MW and was never stopped again. Barkley at 175 couldn't stop him when Iran damn near killed him at at MW. And over the MW limit Leonard couldn't affect him as he did at WW. So yes, I feel Hearn's would hold up better to what Hagler could dish out and it isn't inconceivable that he'd be hitting harder then he would be at MW by a bit. Couple that with no fluke hand breaking and Hagler could be in trouble.
Hagler beat Hearns in such a devastating manner, that I can only see Marvin winning again. No matter what the weight.
The 12 round distance might have had something to do with that. Leonard had him in bad trouble several times as it was, if he had had three more rds it could well have ended the same as it did the first time. They would both of course paced themselves differently.
