Wow, nice, high quality. Hagler/Hearns round 1 was one of the best rounds I've ever seen. But, the fight, as a whole, was not among the best fights I've ever seen. Hearn's lack of chin prevented that. I prefer a 12 or 15 round war where both guys throw and land a lot of punches. Resilence matters.
Just saw this on YouTube. It's amazing. Anyone notice that Hearns has his chins up the entire fight? Pretty interesting because guys like @mrkoolkevin will rip apart Corbett for having his chin up for two seconds. I love the way Hearns can punch while moving laterally. Has has so many unique punches from that position. And his check hook is a thing of beauty. In this HD video you can see the power in Haglers punches better, and you can sense the trajectory better. He had heavy hands. A crazy fight where both guys had championship mentalities. Both guys were great boxers. Both guys really wanted it. But only one could be called winner!
For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure I'm on the record criticizing Hearns for fighting a tactically dumb fight (in part because the stronger, superior Hagler forced him out of his comfort zone).
This is why I love Hagler and Hearns. They both had heart and soul and put everything in to there fight s, win or lose.
Saying that Hearns fought a dumb fight is dumb. As if you have the answers that he didn't. Can you get any more pompous? Second, im not talking about his fight game. I'm talking about his chin being high. What's your saying again? A half decent trainer would've removed that from him in one week? Yeah, ydksab.
LOL. Maybe, but I don't remember enough of the back story behind Hearns' fight plan in this one to really weigh in on the analogy. Did he decide he was going to stand his ground and outslug Hagler?
Yes, I could be wrong but I certainly assume that Hearns was instructed not to hold his chin high. He did so anyway and paid the price. Not sure why you think this means I dksab but whatever floats your boat. For entertainment purposes though, would you mind telling me your alternative hot take? Was Hearns' chin-high technique actually some kind of advanced stratagem for ATG fighters? Maybe there was nothing wrong with it at all?
The point being, when an old school fighter does it (for only seconds) you attribute to a manifestation of their time period. When clearly such mistakes are era agnostic.
But, you're admitting Hagler FORCED him to fight that way. Therefore, it is contradictory to say he fought a dumb fight. Anyway if Hearns tried to run, Hagler would have cut him off and pounced. Hearns didn't have the legs or resilence to last if he moved and boxed or stood and fought.
Not completely though--Hagler brought the pressure but Hearns had options. I didn't mean to suggest that it was out of his hands. And I'm not sure why people think he couldn't have used his footspeed and length to get distance from Hagler if it had been a priority. I read an interview where he insisted that he chose to stand his ground and try to stop Hagler early because he was worried that he wouldn't have the legs to go the distance (I think because of the notorious leg rub, maybe).
