it never gets old. The thing which amazes me is we have had so few Hagler vs. Hearns. We have had great fights, but not fights where the round one bell rings and they swing for the fences. It was obvious their personal feelings for each other got involved in the fight, which made for the best first round in history, but if you look at the reality of it Marvin and Tommy this wonderful fight was made because they fought rather unprofessionally just on the personal aspect of anger. But we appreciate the fact that two guys at this level had the ego and pride to brawl like that. They didn't care about technique they engaged in a way most fighters don't in round one when all fighters are fresh and punching their hardest and usually careful not to get hit with a big punch from a fresh fighter. I am surprised neither guy went down in round one , or round 2 either. They took chances which were courageous but some might say careless, but regardless round one will always be the test of a great fight-hopefully we will have another fight like that again.. Either guy could have walked into a big punch and both guys were hurt in the first minute of the fight. I don't think GGG vs. Canelo can be that fight. GGG would love it and Canelo would lose early. This fight would not go 3 rounds if Canelo and GGG decided to do a Hagler vs. Hearns.

I highly doubt Canelo-GGG goes this way, considering neither man (I think) we be able to utterly dominate one phase of the fight the way Hearns could. Hagler had no choice but to fight the way he did. It was the only shot he had. Both Canelo and GGG should be versatile enough to hang at any range. I'm working on a full breakdown.

you are right Hagler knew he had to reach Hearns and the only way was to fight that way. Although, GGG fighting that way would be better for him than Canelo, I don't see Canelo exchanging. I remember a day after Hagler vs. Hearns, Hagler said it was a great fight. It takes two to tango. So If Canelo chooses to brawl I think it will be a brawl. in reality Canelo has to use his jab and speed and get under GGG punches. I think GGG would be smart to go to the body of Canelo.. That is the key to the fight for GGG. For either really, but more for GGG if Canelo is faster and harder to hit with head punches.

Watch this fight closely, you'll see that after 90 seconds of brawling with Hagler Hearns goes into reverse and Marvin walks him down.

Thing is both are excellent body punchers. But Canelo relies on his head movement much more than GGG. Body punches are kryptonite to head movement. Canelo has the faster hands and nasty power of his own. They are fairly similar but GGG relies more on his chin than Canelo does. Maybe it's his downfall. I'm working on it.

Hearns was on the back foot the entire time. Hagler never took a step back.

Nice. Why was there never a rematch? Surely there was a crazy demand for it from the fans. Although it is understandable if Hearns concluded one fight with Hagler was too many.

I hope the cat who made a cameo at 6:37 has a boxing related nickname?

I've got two of them, the one you saw was Lady Catlyn of the Riverlands. Will a game of thrones reference do?

:D I have 3 myself and the youngest is called Joffrey which gets shortened to my name on here.

Are you old enough to answer my question about why there was never a rematch? Surely boxing fans were clamouring for it after this war.

IIRC Hagler took the Mugabi fight as his next defense, then the Sugar Ray money fight. Retired. It's all Sugar Ray's fault really. But no I'm 28 and just enjoy learning things.

    Jofre sounds like a C***.

Hearns wanted the rematch. I don't think Hagler did. I think Marvin knew the way he had to fight would be hard to duplicate, and he and hearns became more friendly after the first fight, Marvin might not have had the same anger to fight that way.

Although it was the best 3 rounds of boxing, It has to be said that Hearns fractured his right hand in multiple places after that right uppercut to Haglers dome in Round 1... For me the fight is over then .. what happens next was just the gravy ... And that is not to be intended to take anything away from Hagler ..

to this day I think Hearns could have knocked out Hagler. And if he could not, at least cut him up and stop it on tko. but Hagler fought the fight of his life and put his all out in round one crowding him and it was a brilliant fight plan as Emanuel said later. By the way, do you know how Hagler got his cut? I figured it out just on one viewing..
