But Hopkins was old by then and coudl not afford to thorw ass many punches as he did in his youth. In the end of the first fight, it was Talyor who was buzzed, bot Hopkins.
Hagler looked like a slow starter in some other fights. Mugabi and Leonard come to mind. Wasn't Muganbi at one point outboxing Hagler?
I favor young Hagler by tko. Jabs dont compare. Marvin's put 55 stitches on Mustafa and 3 jabs opened up Sibson. Who has Bernard opened up with his jab? Hagler the better in every department
Why are you bringing the last two fights of Hagler, when he'd clearly slowed down? That's like picking the Hopkins of his late 30s and early 40s who threw a punch every eon. At their primes it can go either way IMO.
Hagler was 32 for Leonard, and Hopkins was ( GASP! ) 40 for Taylor. Is that fair in your book? I don't see 32 as being old.
Hagler, 67 fights ,scored 52 kos ,38 of them inside the half way mark,6 in the 1st round ,slow starter?
What you say is true but Hagler was at the end of his career and he almost retired after the Mugabi fight. When your career is winding down it takes you longer to get started.
How did I know you'd come straight back with this argument? Age is just a number; fighters wear differently. Hagler had been in with many more rough fighters than Hopkins had - it's there to see on film how much he'd slipped. Take it from someone who's watched more Hagler footage than most, from his first filmed fight 'til his last - Hagler peaked between '80 and '82 depending on which fights from that period you prefer, and he slipped rapidly from '85-'87.
Vs Leonard and Mugabi, yes. I think Hagler was great. I like him better than Hopkins. But he wasn't a seek and destory guy like Tyson....yet that is his image in the minds of some.
Who cares what the image in the minds of some are? Some people only know Hopkins for being so boring and throwing a punch every decade. People that watched more of Hagler and Hopkins know better.
Hopkins had less left at 40 in comparison to Hagler at 32. I think we both agree here. Yes, Hagler looked better from 1980-1982, but part of that is due to the level of competition he fought in those years. Hagler fought much better fighters from 1983-1987. I think we also agree here. I also feel part of Hagler KO% is a bit padded. Indeed he foguth 17 fighters at or below .500. This does not include qutie a few journyeman that he beat with winning records.
