Nothing odd about it at all:bart

They was no HBO/PPv back then too help you keep your fat arse glued to the sofa. Live gate $$$$$$$$$$$ & Closed Circuit viewing in cinema's around the world was the norm & weekdays where perfect & the big + was that the Las Vegas casino's who fronted up the main $$$ tranch got an extended weekend of high rollers $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ so just like Hagler/Hearns was also on a Monday night with the 1st ring of the bell too syncrinize with east coast time of around 5.30pm so that all the sports bars would be rammed jammed for city boys heading home.

Leonard/Duran 1 in Montreal was on a friday night & Leonard/Hearns 1 was at Caesars on a thursday night so room rates would do the usual x 3/4. midweek brought more $$$$ into Vegas when otherwise it would be flat until the Friday crowd arrived. I went to Leonard/Duran 3 & that i'am sure was on thursday night at the Mirage so they had me there all week dropping booze $$$$$$$$$$$ so i'd lost track of day & time..

I'd have midweek fights anyday but HBO now rule the boxing world & it's all whats best for them, not you, nor me & Vegas has changed so much that a big fight at the MGM dos'nt even create a ripple on the strip.

Anyway today you can buy dvd's & record the fight. But back in the day it was'nt that easy. In the UK i saw Hagler/Hearns live at 5.30am by satalite at a town hall which was only 1 of 5 venue's nationaly showing it.

Or you had to wait till the weekend for highlights. Stateside for example Leonard/Duran 1 was'nt shown on TV for a month as that was how the deals for the $$$$ were cut back then. Promoters had to get every $$$$ of closed circuit income + overseas viewing rights $$$$ in the bag & then & only then was it shown for public consumption on free TV such as ABC.

    Leonard/Duran 1 was fought on June 20th 1980

Now thats something even more odd, a top fight between 3.30 and 5.30pm, you only see olympic matches at these times in the current times.

Not all of coarse where afternoon fights from vegas/reno ect, it was all down to TV schedules fitting in the boxing between football/basketball/soaps & like. Mega fights main events would be geared up say 9pm east coast time, but Duran & plenty of others in the 70's fought at 1pm or 2pm in the afternoon in one defence of his title on a sunday. It was all down too what suited casino's & with the delayed TV rights no one cared as we all got to see the fights at respectable times in our own country's.

Today as we know it's all a saturday night prime-time special. Barry McGuigan was the worst example of scheduling as they put him on against Steve Cruz with the blazing afternoon Vegas desert Sun to contend with just so us over here & in ireland could stay up & watch it & thats what wiped him out in the end.

  7. Lennox Lewis Vs Gary Mason for the British and European titles was on a Wednesday night, March 6th 1991.

Leonard and Hearns rematch - Monday June 12, 1989, and they walked away with a combined 17 million, making it the highest paid sporting event to that date.
