Hagler wasn't "slipping fast." His performance against Leonard was the worst of his career, and no previous fights would have indicated a such a precipitous decline. That fight was clearly an anomaly and Leonard knew it. The first two rounds were completely ridiculous. Hagler was acting like he had no idea what he wasn't doing in the ring. That wasn't going to happen twice, and that is why Leonard didn't want the rematch. It is debatable whether Leonard could have out boxed him 10 years previously. There is no debating the fact that Leonard never won a round by his own skill. Hagler gave them them away.
You think a prime Hagler would have taken 9 rounds to get rid of a one-dimensional light middleweight like Mugabi? As for Leonard not winning at rounds by his own skill, thats just plain biased hating. Leonard would have won the first 3 of those rounds at least no matter what Hagler did, Haglers mistake was not just in losing those rounds but in not making Leonard pay a price for winning them that might have caught up with him later in the fight. Leonard was always going to win those rounds, he just shouldn't have got them for free. But if you are going to take the attitude thats theres "no debating" anything you don't agree with then I won't waste my time.
Another case again of fighter suddenly past prime when he lost..atsch Yes, that was prime Hagler. He was only 32 years old, and in his last 2 outing2 he KOed Migabi and Hearns and look fantastic doing so. There is nothing to suggest that Hagler was suddenly past his prime, except for the fact that Leonard made him look so.
Are you on the wind up ? atsch Have you even watched the actual fight ? You say Leonard had no answer in the rounds when Hagler performed well. Well an unbiased person could also say that Hagler had no answer to Leonards ring generalship and brilliant quick fire flurries. You clearly have a poster of Marvin above your bed at home. I notice that you fail to mention that Leonard fought Hagler (one of the best middles ever) with no tune up fights having fought once in the previous 5 yrs and having never even fought at middle before. Hagler was basically fighting a blown up welter. It was a very close fight, but for me Leonard won. This has been debated to death over the years. Some people think Hagler won but considerably more than 50% of people think Leonard won.
