A poll in one Las Vegas newspaper found 60 of 67 journalists covering the fight favoured Hagler. Larry Merchant: ' i wouldnt go on the operating table if i knew the surgeon hadnt been practising regulary for 5 years. In any profession its impossible to maintain the same level of effectiveness when you have been away that long.' Pat Putnam: ' A man cant train in a tuxedo for 5 years and expect to beat the middleweight champion of the world.' Budd Schullberg: 'Hagler in four or five. I think hell be able to force Leonard to fight and if that happens hes just too big for him.' Dave Anderson: Every time i look at Leonard i keep thinking about Kevin Howard' Tom Cryan: 'I cant see Leonard taking this fight unless he thought he had a good chance of winning it. I cant see either fighter knocking the other out, so im saying Leonard by decision.' Michael Katz: ' In the Hearns fight i saw that Marvins legs were no longer there after the first round and in the Mugabi fight it was clear that his reflexes were fading, he was taking shots he never would have been subjected too before.' Common opponents 2-1 Leonard Marcos Geraldo: Sugar Ray, hes got more class and boxing ability. Hes more refined.' Roberto Duran: 'I fought both and i should know, Leonard has no chance.' Thomas Hearns: The layoff will affect Ray, but i think hell be abke to overcomne it. Ive seen how well he thinks in the ring. Hes the better boxer if he boxes, goes side to side and gets his head movement going, he wins but if he goes toe to toe, i think its a mistake.' Puts leonards win in perspective he was against it. But interestingly common opponents picked Leonard so tahts something to think about. Thoughts. On a sidenote Ray Leonard was planning on going toe to toe with Hagler and getting into a fight hoping to cut Hagler up and win on points but in Sparring a spar mate called Quincy Taylor droped and hurt Ray and Ray realised he couldnt go toe to toe. Was Quincy the most important person in this fight.
haha if anyones wondering why i have all these posts from Hagler leonard and Duran is i have been working in a quarry weighing the lorries going out and have half the day free so have read hands of Stone and Fourkings again and these was intresting bits in it
makes you wonder why leonard chose such time to come out of retirement. one would think if youre going to continue your career that you would defend the title
Leonard was 34 years old and hadn't made the weight for 7 years. The inactiveness eventually took it's toll as well. You seem to be on the only person on the planet who thinks Leonard wasn't well past his prime ala shot.
If I had a pound for everytime someone said "Robbi amazing avatar" I'd have a few hundred due to it. :good Joke.
This fight between Leonard and Hagler always astounds me with the infamy and controversy that people always talk about .. Maybe at the time it was controversial but if anybody views this fight now and scores Hagler the winner then they belong in a lunatic asylum .. Ive watched this fight over 20 times and im not biased either way, im a huge fan of Hagler and equally so of Leonard, but Leonard definately wins this fight by 2 rounds .. It would be far more controversial if Hagler had been awarded the decision .. Hagler was slow, inaccurate and got picked off by Leonard and just because Hagler was coming forward shouldnt change the fact that Leonard scored the more effective punches. This fight was in no way controversial when you compare it to, Zarate v Pintor, Whitaker v Chavez, Taylor v Chavez, Sturm v De La Hoya or Lewis v Holyfield 1 .. Leonard wins this all the way !!
